Tony Almond – 1950′s – A Boy, his dog and his air rifle.
We were friends since infancy, though time and boarding schools drifted us apart. In about 1954 we spent one last summer together. He was the best friend a boy ever had. This is a summer’s day in 1953 or 1954 when we were both about 13 or 14 years old. Mostly just him because I was filming, but I make a brief appearance at the end, when he took over the camera. Thank you for your lovely response. I’m happy and amazed that it could still remind you of your childood. I thought those freedoms to roam with an air gun were long gone. You are, in fact, a year younger than my youngest son. I don’t think he has similar memories, but then he was not a child in Britain. My French grandson does seem to come close though. So it is not dead. I loved Stand By Me. I think it is the ultimate movie about boyhood.
It’s BSA Air Sporter Junior Calibre .177. I had one as well. That might be mine in the film. They were quite powerful. Could easily punch a hole in a tin can.
I remember when we both fired repeatedly at the chimney pot of some grownup we didn’t like and, judging by the cries of alarm that came from inside the house, we eventually succeeded in bringing down a big load of soot. Boys eh!
Notice too the sheath knife. If you didn’t wear one all the time then you weren’t a boy!
