Puppies chasing chickens: Dog Training

www.pamsdogacademy.com The other day we worked with Blue on learning how to be calm around the family chickens. He was running back and forth chasing chickens and looking for chickens when I arrived. Now he is calmly hanging out with them. This is the same thing that I do with my dogs or clients dogs that like to chase cats. Prevention is key! When the dog is reinforced for the proper behavior the dog is more likely to repeat that behavior. Because chasing chickens, cats or other things is highly reinforcing YOU MUST have a plan, a GREAT REWARD, a leash to prevent failure, and set the dog up to succeed. We were able to start really close to the chickens, but if the puppy was not able to be calm, then I would have moved the puppy further away until he was below his threshold. There was only one time in this session that I had to interrupt Blue for staring at the chicken and doing his herding stocking behavior. Have a great Day! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit & Twix

I need to do this with my dog. Our neighbors have pet ducks and Fi is DYING to herd them (or possibly eat them…)
@humuguru Yes, in the beginning and when around new or more difficult distractions. However, I condition the kissy noise so much that it becomes muscle memory and almost reflex.
You never know where you might be or when you will need to interrupt a behavior, so I make sure to practice it everywhere I can.
@pamelamarxsen after you interrupt with a kissy noise do you mark and treat?
great work, Blue was calm at the end
Great tips!!! I’ll have to start doing this with my dogs to help them not the chase the cats. I’ve tried many things… but I think this one might do the trick! Thanks!!!
@pamelamarxsen

@illyas1 Yep! I do this with my dogs and cat to prevent them from chasing her. It can be done with anything really! Prevent dogs from chasing kids, cats, other dogs, cars, and anything else that moves.
