www.pamsdogacademy.com Humping Sure male dogs hump to mate, but many times dogs will hump out of stress, over arousal, frustration, boredom and for attention. Dogs will hump human legs, stuffed animals, furniture, and other animals/dogs. Many think this is a behavioral problem, but really it seems quite normal dog behavior, which is why I used the term behavioral issue. However, even though most of the time it is normal behavior, that does not mean we want our dogs going around humping strangers, family members, other dogs, or things. It just is not socially acceptable (according to us humans). I personally know that when my puppy would hump he was overly excited or frustrated when learning a new trick. I do not want my dog so over the top that he can’t focus on learning the trick and I do not want him frustrated. I want a dog that is calm or in a learning state of mind. One can’t learn if they are so anxious about something that they can’t think straight. This goes for our dogs as well! Take a look at how much exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction your dog gets. If your dog is bored, lacks exercise, and lacks social interaction with humans or dogs he may learn to get your attention by attention by humping the couch. Watch your dog and know what triggers the humping or what will cause him stress, which could lead to the humping. I can tell when my puppy is getting frustrated and I end training early or switch to something a bit easier for him. I also know …

When are you going to do a dramatic Laika?
@kikopup That is so awesome! Now I need to post one of this puppy that I am puppy sitting. He likes to try to grab onto poor Twix’s hind leg and all I do is prevent it when I see it about to happen and then remove him if he is doing it, and then have him hang out with me as I calm him down.
When I was in Holland, I was told by someone how grateful they were that you posted this video!!!!
both my male and female dogs try to hump the youngest male dog but they do not try to hump each other (the male & female). So, that is why I thought it was a domination type thing because the youngest one is not as strong as the other two so he just stands there frozen. Whenever I see that I always try to stop it. Mainly it’s the female that’s the one that does it the most. But also, she spends a lot of time grooming him and also she’s protective of him.
@bravescatz I am sure that the hard part is traveling with chickens and is probably the main reason they have the workshops close to their homes. I have Bobs DVD set and from what I can tell from a friends posts on Facebook, he talked about most everything that is on that DVD. So, you probably have heard it.
It is the hands on part that is fun!! The training part does not change much, but working on timing, food delivery, placement of reward etc. is fun with chickens!
@pamelamarxsen Thanks Pamela. Terry Ryan is the one I’m looking at going to. I have heard so much about the chicken camps and have the Bob Bailey Operant Conditioning video and it makes me want to go to one. Finding them on the East Coast has been the issue.
@bravescatz I’ve done a mini chicken camp with Terry Ryan. Never been to Bob Bailey’s camp. From what I have heard about his last one, it was awesome! Maybe one day.
)
Hi Pamela, have you ever been to a chicken camp? If so is it worth making a trip to go to one?~Tonya
@DeltaDalmatian That’s true, that dogs sometimes hump when playing, but that’s not a rule. Just some of them do it.
Wild dogs that grow up together will often stay together and live in small packs (for example 5, 6 dogs). Of course individuals that don’t know each other won’t form packs.
One of the studies: I’ve read a very interesting book about a study of wild living dogs with almost no human contact. It’s a german book “Die Pizza Hunde” by Günther Bloch. The title means “the pizza dogs”.
@itsfreeanddizzy I know! I have been at dog parks and people just ignore their dogs and all their dogs behavior issues. If it is too bad, I just get my dogs and leave. Most of the time I go to a private field that I belong to and do agility or freestyle, but sometimes I am not up for the 30 min drive. It is easier to go to a dog park. Although, I do not frequent them.
@pamelamarxsen many people just ignore it because they really believe it’s in their dog’s nature and it’s not stoppable even if you tell them that they could do something about it and that is upsetting that they’re not even interested in helping their doggie to calm down
@itsfreeanddizzy Thanks! Glad you knew what I meant. I just did not want people thinking that this would work for every dog just because it works for mine. It is just my way of calming my guy down.
I should do research on this topic as it does seem to be one that many are very frustrated with or concerned about is a better way of putting it. People just do not know what to do when it happens.
love it, i see it happening a lot in the dog parks and the owners dont do anything, that’s a good info here. although, you can’t say “it’s just a theory” because theory is the highest thing that exists..i mean it’s a proven fact. first is hypothesis and based on hypothesis after proving all the facts the scientists can announce a theory which is the final and proven fact. so i would exchange that term in your video or explain it better. anyhow i know what you meant, hope your viewers do as well
@nicolebodea I have an apt to get his hips x-rayed to see if he is fully matured. If he is, I will neuter him around 16 months. If he is not fully matured, then I will wait until 2 years. I am also getting Bandit’s hips x-rayed because since he broke his tibia at 6 months I have worried about his hips ever since. So, I figure it is best just to x-ray them and make sure he is fine and then I can stop worrying so much.
@pamelamarxsen That’s awesome you are waiting until 2 years old! A lot of people still think you should neuter at 6 months. I think that is way to early and I’m sure you have read the articles of what the result could be..they usually remain in puppy stages as well as there bones not fully developing, along with them usually getting taller. If you neuter at around 8 weeks old they usually end up very small. It happens a lot in kittens where the law is you have to neuter before they are adopted..
@pamelamarxsen Unfortunately no
@pamelamarxsen Thank you!
I understand what you saying about the timing of the neutering. I delayed Koani’s because I thought she needed more time. I think you just have to trust your own instincts and heart at times. And I think this is definitely a “technique” and can be used as a general “calming” action/reaction when they get a bit more out of control than we’d like. I use something similar when they get crazy playing with the boys, whom they adore. Seems to help.
@azmauigirl Thank you! I have had so much success with this calming Twix down technique (if you want to call it a technique, hehe). He is not neutered yet. I am trying to hold off until he is 2 years to make sure his bones, ligaments, and tendons are fully matured. He is so sweet and focused on working with me that one would never know he is intact. I never had humping issues with Bandit or Isabelle. It is awesome how every dog that comes into our lives teaches us something!
@puppiesRloved I am so happy that this video has helped! You and others like you that need help or simple ways to solve normal dog behaviors is WHY I do so many videos on YT. Take care and good luck with your dog! Remember, our dogs do not live long lives so ENJOY every minute you can with your best friend; your dog!
@smoon3 Thanks! When I captured these clips on film, I was using the footage that did not have him humping in trick tutorials and how to work with two dogs while one waited his turn. Then I noticed I was getting a ton of questions about humping and had a few clients that were also having the issue. So, I made the video. All dogs have issues and it is our responsibility to help them. No one is perfect and so we should not expect our dogs to be perfect. I also believe it is hormonal.
@ponyluv617 There has been a lot of recent research on dogs that are fearful, anxious of things such as thunder storms. The research is saying it is ok to comfort the dog and it will NOT cause the dog to think he should be scared. It helps sooth the dog and calm him down. If I am upset, stressed, or what not I would want to be calmed down or comforted. My thought is that since my pup was anxious and overly excited that calming him down will take away the urge to hump. It works for him!
Great video, Pamela. Hopefully this will be of great help to those whose dogs have this behavior. Great ideas and thoughtfulness to show them and what you do. I’m fortunate not to have this problem, but can now offer this video to others. You’re awesome!
OMG I just dealt with this behavior last night. But my border does this when she plays with my Aussie at times. I always read it was dominance so it was upsetting me. I just separate them, it is not difficult to do so. But I though she just trying to dominate him. I am so glad you posted this.
thank you!!!! my puppy has started doing this when she plays with her toys in an excited way! this is going to help me lots on how to deal with it! thanks =)
I really enjoyed this video Pamela. I like your one subtitle that you were never planning on showing those clips.
I know what u mean. haha It really shows dog trainers have to problem solve even on their own dogs.
Although my dog mounted occasionally early on, after being neutered he has not displayed this behavior. I believe mine was a hormonal issue.
