Ok I get your point but I’ve heard that you newfies call each other by that term and commonly refer to yourselves as newfies? That does not sound like a ‘vast majority’. In any case my usage is not meant to be offensive, it is used as a term of endearment for a dog not a person. And I have heard that you can get license tags in mainland Canada, (Alberta) that say newfie, as some consider it a term of pride.
Hey thomaslabash,
That of course is a matter of conscience for you, now that you know the difference. Maybe you can trade for a set of “Newf” tags. As far as I know, none of the Canadian provinces would allow “newfi” to appear on a licence plate as, officially, it is a taboo word in this country. Recently a radio station in Toronto, Ontario was ordered (under threat of licence suspension) to broadcast an apology for airing a “newfi” joke. Its akin to that other nasty “N” word to Newfoundlanders
Are you aware that the vast majority of people from Newfoundland consider the term “newfi” to be highly offensive. It’s like using “paki” to describe a person (dog) from Pakistan.
The accepted collective term (for the dog)is The(a) Newfoundland. If you must shorten the name, please, apply the term “Newf”. As for addressing the person, only “Newfoundlander” is acceptable.
