Five new police dogs will be hitting the streets of Essex and Kent after successfully completing their training at Essex Police’s Dog Unit. On Wednesday, December 21, 2011, the German Shepherds and their police officer handlers, one of whom is from Kent Police, ‘passed out’ during a special ceremony at the unit in Sandon, Chelmsford. The video clip above shows a dog and handler in action during a display for family and friends as part of the ceremony. This is not a real life situation but has been mocked up for the display. The ceremony was particularly special because all of the dogs paired with Essex Police handlers are the first litter from the force’s breeding programme which launched in 2010. The pups were born on May 8 last year after Essex Police dog three-year-old German Shepherd Xena was bred with Rio, a five-year-old German Shepherd belonging to Greater Manchester Police. With the World Cup just around the corner, officers decided on names linked to the tournament for the litter of 10 pups. Xena has never been an operational police dog but was bought by Essex Police at a young age with the view to potentially breed because her genes singled her out as the ideal mum to police dog pups. Since October four of the young dogs, now aged just over a year and a half, have been on a course to train as general purpose police dogs.
