This is the first part of Susan Garrett’s “Crate Games”. The game was create to help encourage a dog’s impulse control while, later, building drive in and out of the crate. This was Zelda’s first attempt and the game and although she seems a bit worried, I knew she would learn the game quickly. The 1st session took about 15 minutes to complete. I will post a couple followup videos to show her progress – you will see her confidence grow as time goes by See you next time!

Hypothetically, if the dog is calm in the crate and allows you to place the leash on him with out a fuss will they also respond the same way out and a way from the crate. I have a 11 week old Boston Terrier and he still hasn’t gotten the idea that it isn’t a time to play.
Continued from previous reply – and second, that by physically getting in the dog space you help get them in the back and the sit. Many who have tried skipping this step have gotten dogs that turn to the back or look to the side of the crate – the purpose is to sit straight so that when you are ready to play the advanced crate games, they will be facing the correct direction In other words – facing toward the exit of the crate. Yes, you can feed through the wire, but Susan Garrett’s video does address the reprocussions – The video shows you can do this later in the game – but not at the start. Reason: first the opening of the crate door (actually the sound of the latch) is supposed to trigger the dog into the sit. By opening the door and reaching far in the back to feed you are doing 2 things: Teaching them to resist the urge to break out and – continued in next reply-
is there any reason why you could not feed her through the back of the crate rather then reach in ( as it is a wire crate) to help her sit further back in the crate ??
