Appropriate Play Behavior in a Group of Dogs of Various Sizes
Enjoy this fun video of a group of dogs playing. Notice how none of the dogs are obsessed with another dog and each is easily called off by their owner. Do you see how the bigger dogs match the play styles of the smaller dogs? It is such a pleasure to watch appropriate dogs with normal behavior play. Capturing a behavior is easy to do if you are patient and have good timing when using a clicker or other marker. You can follow these simple steps to help your dog understand what the behavior is, and how to train a physical and verbal cue that tells your dog to perform it. I used licking her chops as an example, but almost any behavior that your dog does naturally can be captured. sit, down, stand, eye contact, head down, ear movements, eye blinks etc

It’s so nice to see happy dogs playing well together! They’re all so cute!
great video !!
you are good !
Great stuff! Many thanks for the detailed explanation. Will have to try this with my monster
Nice demo. Look forward to your next video.
great info ! thankyou

Excellent…I am in the process of capturing Inca to yawn, so this has given me lots more info on how to fine tune everything…thankyou:)
Good job Donna!
@freelysd Thanks! Can you tell I love breaking things down into bits? I think has to do with my teaching style. Jessie seems to like it as she’gets’ most behaviors pretty quickly, even when shaping.
@nataliawasilewska97 Hmm. Might be a trick to add in the future. Jessie isn’t a real fan of anyone touching her tail, but that might be something to work on for that reason! I’d likely use targeting to get her touhcing her tail at first, then cue a take, pull, then shape a bigger turn (since she is already likley circling just to grab that tail!).
@Eileen782 Ha! You’d have to be pretty creative with that wouodn’t you! LOL!
The first behavior I ever officialy captured (actually sort of knew what I was doing) was Jessie putting her chin on her hip, which she did alot. I never taught it to completion to verbal cue to she still has no clue what ‘curl’ means, unless its accompanied by the hand signal. LOL! I love the way Jessie’s eye proble me trying to figure out what I want! I wish it would show up on video!
Great video, Donna. 5* and a fave. I plan to share this. It’s fun to realize all the different behaviors you can capture. I taught Rounder how to exhale in my hand. Once the dogs are ‘in the game,’ the sky is the limit. Great job and keep the videos coming.

Good clear and crisp capturing.
Very nice job marking the lick that is separate from the eating of the treat! such a common challenge for most.
Love to see examples of having very clear criteria.
Lovely job! Thanks for sharing!
Nice one! Excellent job!
great video. Could you teach jessie how to chase her tail?? please. It is a really cute trick. 5* and subscribe..
Try doing that with a choke chain! Great fun
Thanks! Jessie is sure enjoying this. It’s really cute to watch her experiment with what behavior might be the one that gets clicked. I wish I could get some head on clips as her eys are searching mine as if they will tell her what to do.
Super job! It’s not easy to lay out all the steps as well as you have. I am currently capturing sneeze, as Mi tends to do this when we begin a training session. Timing is not easy but the process is really fun! Your other suggestions are great too. 5*
