How To Stop Lagging In Dog Obedience?

    by Ed Yourdon

Question by : How To Stop Lagging In Dog Obedience?
More and more lately my 6y/o aussie has been lagging a lot on her Heel Free/Off leash Figure 8…she is pretty food motivated and I always use positive training methods. I have been gradually trying to work her off of treats but without them she has less energy, interest, and attention to me – I have also tried putting her on a tab leash so I can correct her but work sort of off lead, but whenever I let go of it she starts to fall behind.

We have a show coming up next week so I’d like a few quick tips I can use when I work with her this week but also some things to work on over time because I know this won’t just happen overnight. She is also easily distracted so a few tips on that would be nice as well – she knows ‘watch me’ but it seems whenever we’re not at home/in the ring she just forgets it all. Thank You!

Practice, practice, pratice. I’m sure you already know that though lol. Try working your pup with a leash you can just leave on her and not have to hold that way if things go amiss you can easily correct. I don’t know what your practice routine is but you could also try working your dog in public so she gets doesn’t get as excited in new places and gets used to different sights and sounds. Lots of praise, food, and talking to your dog can never hurt either :3

Has anyone enrolled their dog in a Petsmart obedience class? My dog is aggressive with other dogs.?

    Yes, I have

If your dog is severely aggressive, they probably wont let him in the class. A private trainer is probably the option to take until you can get some socialization/training

what do you think about obedience classes for this kind of dog?

Question by a lady: what do you think about obedience classes for this kind of dog?
she’s a 4 year old mutt, she’s small (10 pounds) anyway, my mom (which i don’t live with) thinks it will be a good idea for me to take my dog to obedience classes so she can socialize (she has no doggy friends),and maybe learn a few new tricks…..she already knows general obedience (sit, stay, up, get off, outside) that i taught her…… is it worth taking her to classes?? i think maybe she’ll like the new activity, something new for both of us?? how will she react with so many other dogs when she’s only been one on one when she see’s other dogs she’s never been with a group???

    Best answer:

    Answer by Jacob B
well usually dogs that arent socialized in puppyhood, arent that great with other dogs, u may be able to socialize her now, but there is a chance that she will just be dog aggressive right away, yes obedience class is great for any dog though, so you can try

Question by : Where near San Marcos can I take my young dog to obedience school that is inexpensive but beneficial?
I am a 13 year old straight A student who is responsible, reliable and caring. I love my dog and care for her as she was my own daughter. My dog is a female Chihuahua mix who is around 1-2 years old. I have no idea because I just received her a couple months ago. She hates strangers and is very hyper. Hopefully I will be able to train her since she only obeys the command “sit” if you have a treat for her. I don’t have that much money. Both of my parents were laid off a few months ago and we are a family of seven. Therefore, we are struggling and my parents don’t let me take her to school and I also need help convincing my parents to let me take her to school.

Check with the animal shelters near you. Many have low cost obedience classes that are very good.

Enter your zip code for shelters near you. Look at their Web pages or call to see if they have training classes.

Q&A: recommended obedience trainer in my area?

6415068893 56210d9199 m Q&A: recommended obedience trainer in my area?
    by Michigan Dog Trainer

Question by Kelly: recommended obedience trainer in my area?
I have English Bulldog pups who I would like to start obedience training with as soon as possible. Any suggestions for a good trainer in the North Seattle/Edmonds/South Everett area?

I am not really interested in petco or petsmart training unless someone can name a specific person there, I have not found their training to be very effective in the past
yes i have a computer and I’m not stupid, I am looking for referrals for trainers that people have actually used and can recommend, not someone’s website.

    Best answer:

    Answer by Lisa C
You obviously have a computer- just search dog training, edmonds, wa. That’s what I did, and this is what I found:
    Corey McLennan Animal Behavioral Consultant
    (206) 542-4485 – Edmonds, WA
    Whole Pup
    (425) 776-3083 – 7705 230th St Sw, Edmonds, WA
Ahimsa Dog Training, Seattle – (8)
    (206) 364-4072 – 902 Nw 49th St, Seattle, WA

Petsmart trainers get very little or no education, they are not much help, especially for a stubborn breed.

Thinking about sending my Yorkie Poo to Obedience School.. Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions?

Question by : Thinking about sending my Yorkie Poo to Obedience School.. Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions?
I want/NEED to try to get my dog in obedience school of some sort. He listens pretty well, but then again, he doesn’t. He knows his name, he’ll come to it if he wants to, but when he doesn’t want to, he absolutely doesn’t. Is there possibly a good book for me to follow in order to get him to actually pay attention!? lol. Any opinions and answers are greatly appreciated!
First of all I wasn’t planning on sending him off for someone to train him. I was planning on going with him or ‘sending’ him with my boyfriend, who is his owner too. Second, by looking at Bentley, you wouldn’t even be able to tell he is anything but full yorkie. I’m sure you imbecile’s definately wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. So you definately have no right to call him a “mutt,” I thought I would make this post to find what is best for my dog from people who MIGHT know. Obviously you all don’t know anything but how to be rude smartasses.

Don’t call the dog a Yorkipoo the dog is a mutt…mongrel

Yorkshire Terrier poodle mixed, thats some wonderful advice, calling the dog by its proper name, makes you sound so much more grammatically intelligent.
