Q&A: Can you help me with some dog grooming tips?

Question by Wild Wolf: Can you help me with some dog grooming tips?
I recently got a dog from a neighbor. She is a husky mix. She told me that she could not control her when she tried to groom her. She also had no leash manners. It did not take very long to teach her how to walk on a leash. Much to my surprise, I have no trouble with brushing her fur. She seems to really enjoy it. The vet showed me how to clip her nails and brush her teeth. He had no problem doing this, but I do. What could I be doing wrong?

Grooming has many benefits other than having an odor-free companion whose coat is a joy to touch.

But just as important is the bonding that takes place when you spend time running your hands over your dog’s body while you groom. Your dog will love the concentrated attention from you.

Q&A: grooming at a dog show using power inverter?

Question by Jennifer: grooming at a dog show using power inverter?
Can someone give me some input on what size Power Inverter you use, what brand, and/or any tips before I purchase an inverter.

I’m fortunate to have received a gift certificate and really want to finally buy one.

My dryer is the Air Force Metro (the orange one) that’s 11.25 amp, 4 horsepower. The dog groomed would be German Shepherd, pretty much just sprayed with a dressing and “fluffed up” so maybe 10-15 minutes of use.

Of course, it would be nice to be able to use maybe a microwave or coffee pot possibly. Thanks in advance

Q&A: Opening a dog grooming shop?

    2344248616 8bb7ccd000 m Q&A: Opening a dog grooming shop?
    by D.Clow – Maryland

Question by nomnkybusiness: Opening a dog grooming shop?
I am a BIG animal lover. I have several Shih-tzus and I have wanted to open up a dog grooming shop for quite some time.

However, there are no dog grooming schools around here and no one wants to “train” someone to groom because they could be competition.

Would it be possible to hire a groomer to do the grooming and pay a commission? And then possibly learn some from them? I would make appointments and do the bathing and of course help out – I am just wondering if this idea would work…

I would love some input! Thanks!
Also, how much commission should I pay? And would I supply the suppies and equipment? What about insurance?

    Best answer:

    Answer by Graduate Assistant
Why not find a dog groomer in another part of the country (far away from where you are) that is willing to train you? You won’t be competition to them if you live in another state.

Question by : I would like to attend a dog grooming school in New York. How will I make sure that i can still groom in CT?
I know hair dressers are licensed only in the state they got the license in. Is it the same for a dog groomer?

    Best answer:

    Answer by chzbrgr
You don’t need a license to be a dog groomer in NY – you don’t even need to have gone to any kind of school for it (though obviously it’s a good idea). Your certification will be valid there.

    Q&A: Online dog grooming school?

    3218628432 0fbb4b9f51 m Q&A: Online dog grooming school?
    by Vicki & Chuck Rogers

Question by Turtle Girl: Online dog grooming school?
What are you thoughts on taking an online dog grooming school? I realize hands on learning is best with this, but it helps that I have my hairy dog to practice on. In fact I’ve been shaving my own dog for years. He’s a straight haired cockapoo. I also have an aunt with a bichon frise which I could practice on. And my sister has a teacup maltese. So… with these few dogs to practice on, could an online school be beneficial, or would I be better off just practicing on my own? I really want to be certified so I can work from home. I have really bad anxiety or else I’d go to a school where I can get hands on learning. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to finish the course, where as from home I know I could.

So is this a waste of money, or could it be beneficial? I want to learn how to handle dogs correctly, different hair styles, different breeds, proper tools, and everything about grooming dogs. Will an online school give me some of this knowledge?

    Answer by AnotherSchmoe
I can’t say for sure, maybe you would benefit from it. Though I think a hands-on learning environment would be far more useful in this case.

Anyone want to give me some dog grooming tips/ear cleaning?

Question by rachel: Anyone want to give me some dog grooming tips/ear cleaning?
I want to start grooming my dog at home to save some money.
I have a clipper/shaver but it’s low-quality and won’t even cut his hair (his hair is maybe too thick/soft/wiry or something, I’m not sure. They work just fine on our Yorkie).

So, I just groomed him last night with scissors.
Of course, it’s not even and he’s got a few, okay several, bald spots.
    It’s not *horrible* though.

I’m just wondering how to make it more even or blend in any bald spots?
Basically, just any tips for next time would be much appreciated.
I’m also thinking of investing in better clippers, any recommendations or estimates of prices?

Also, should I be cleaning my dog’s ears with ear cleaner stuff?
I’ve never done it and never really thought about it :S
Is it necessary? What do I use? How often? How do I do it?

    Thanks (:
Oh! Sorry! He’s a poodle mix.
I thought I had that in there somewhere..
He has really soft hair (like cotton texture) in some places, other places he has really coarse, wiry, hair.
Thanks for the answers, guys. Super helpful.
I’m sorry my question seems so stupid, haha.
    I’m just new at grooming. Hopefully I’ll get better (;

I don’t know about the hair I have a short coated dog so I can’t help with that but I just clean my ears with water and tissue. The last time I used the ear cleaner stuff it burnt the inside of my dogs ears so I wouldn’t advise that and water works just fine.
