Opinions on shock collars for dogs?
Question by Blayzed: Opinions on shock collars for dogs?
I have a 7 month old chocolate lab puppy. Now, labs are kind creatures no doubt, but if you’ve seen Marley and Me… that movie is quite like what I’m experiencing with the puppy right now. We have problems with him taking things off the counter tops, digging, chewing sprinkler heads, jumping, and basic obedience in general. I’m against shock collars, and would not put one on my dog without testing it on myself first, but I’m at a loss what to do. A trainer was the one who originally suggested looking into this. Are there opinions on alternative training methods? Swatting my pup on the behind and telling him a firm “NO” makes him wag his tail. I would like to know if shock collars are at all effective.

they do nothing but make the dog afraid. if you shock a dog not only will he stay in the yard but will probably not want to go outside at all…i would suggest that you train your dog using positive reinforcement rather then shocks or smacks.

‘Gentle leader’ training collars?
Question by : ‘Gentle leader’ training collars?
I’m looking for more information and first-hand experience stories if you have ever used or currently use a ‘gentle leader’ type collar for training. Frankly, they don’t make sense to me. Any training collar can be misused, and from what I’ve researched the misuse of these collars can do the most damage. They seem to me to be a manipulative approach to training, and I believe that training should be about building trust with your dog; not manipulating it into doing the right thing, but by teaching the dog how to do the right thing and trusting the dog to do so. Having said my current opinion, I’m looking to be proven wrong and given more information on exactly how these collars are used, and what training situations they benefit in. Thanks!

Answer by Hollywood Thrill
They work similarly to horse halters. I have a dog that spins, runs, and goes nuts on a regular leash. I got one of these for her and now she walks right next to me calmly and I don’t have to do anything. Even after obedience classes and working constantly with her with a leash on a collar she still spun and wiggled and was all over the place. So that’s why I tried a gentle leader and she was a whole other dog. The reason why people do damage with them is because they yank on them too hard, which can hurt the dog’s neck. Another problem with them is if you don’t let the dog get used to them. You don’t just put it on them and clip the leash on and go for a walk. You have to put it on them when you’re at home and let them just hang out in them for a little while for a few days so they get used to it. Then you do short walks around the yard, house, etc so they get used to it. Then after that you can take them for longer walks.
Not all dogs need that much time and work to get used to them. My dog honestly wore it for about 15 minutes before I clipped the leash on and tried to walk her since it didn’t seem to phase her, and she was fine and walked right next to me. My brother’s dog however they had to do all that work with her because at first she kept trying to take it off.
So the biggest problems with them are the people. They pull/jerk on them too hard (you should only do a light bump if the dog ignores vocal commands), and they don’t let dogs get acclimated to them.
EDIT: I should add, they don’t work on all dogs, just like prong collars and harnesses don’t work on all dogs.

I posted a question last night about electric shock collars being cruel and inhumane…?
Question by Tiny paws: I posted a question last night about electric shock collars being cruel and inhumane…?
I was shocked by how so many people think its fine to use it and insulted me saying I was ignorant and didn’t know what I was talking about. I gave the example that once I actually bought an e collar and tried it on myself first, I pointed out that it had left me twitching and crying! I don’t exactly remember what level it was on at the moment I tried it since it was years ago but I believe it was in the middle(maybe 4/5) as someone had recommended. I NEVER USED IT ON MY DOG AND RETURNED IT.
Professionals such as VICTORIA STILLWELL do NOT use the e collar as a training method. She uses positive reinforcement as I BELIEVE is the correct way.
Here’s the link to one of her videos where she talks about e collars:
http://animal.discovery.com/videos/its-me-or-the-dog-shock-collars.html
My female dog was aggressive towards people when I adopted her. She was abused. I used Victoria’s techniques and now my dog loves ANYONE that walks inside my house.
I believe it’s typical of the sort of people who like to think these collars are a good idea, too lazy to train the dog or keep it properly, and taking the easy way out by hurting it. It is barbaric, and painful. Fortunately reputable animal welfare agencies are trying to ban them, like other kinds of cruelty are banned. Sadly some people are ignorant and lazy, and are trying to justify this cruelty because it’s less effort than positive training methods.
Here’s the link to my first question:

Do you use electric shock collars on your dogs? Yes/No? why?
Like I said, my female dog WAS aggressive when I first got her. She made ME bleed several times BUT i followed VICRORIA’s positive techniques and now she’s a sweetheard.
Genna:
GOOD FOR YOU:
I am sure your dogs are “happy, safe AND SCARED”.
GREAT COMBINATION
MEL,
How about you train your poor dog to be inside??
Mel,
I exercise my dogs by walking them EVERY DAY twice a day. Why can’t you do the same??
Genna, let me ask you:
You have used the e collar to show your dogs what??
Mel,
I have a backyard too and they play there for about an hour everyday. I DON’T LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE 24/7.
and FYI, I have posted questions about bybs/puppy mills etc. And ofcourse, miraculously everyone one disagrees which makes me happy (I wish it would be the same here, apparently NOT.)
Greekman,
I never cared about her looks. I just followed her techniques and THEY HAVE ALL WORKED!
Genna:
I am shocked you have used the SHOCK collar on your dogs for EVERYTHING.
You have used it for every single little thing and not as your LAST SOURCE (as most people have said).
Genna:
These are the effects of shock collars:
Shock collars can cause heightened aggression and fear responses, according to animal advocacy organization Humane Carolina. Because the shock seems random to the dog, she may associate it with what she sees or experiences when shocked. This could be a child, another dog or the immediate area. Over time the dog can build up multiple fears and aggressions towards unsuitable stimuli, such as children or other dogs.
Fear-aggression is one of the more unpredictable types of aggression, when a dog will bite when she feels threatened, cornered or stressed. Many trainers claim that use or over-use of a shock collar puts a dog in a constant state of fearful arousal, wondering when she may get shocked next. This effect can cause a hair-trigger bite response to what in most dogs would be a very mild stressor.
Collars that emit a warning “beep” before shocking the dog can lead to a generalized fear of all electronic beeping sounds.

Greekman:
Wouldn’t you be a perfect angel if someone put a shock collar on you??? Of course, I know I would because I wouldn’t want to get SHOCKED!
Genna:
MOST inexperienced people use the e collar and don’t even try it on themselves before putting it on the poor dog

Our friends dog Sophie(RIP) had a shock collar on for when she barked because she was a barker and after a couple months she got very anti socal and afraid of people i bet i was the only one who treated her like she should have been
TO THOSE OF YOU WHO SUPPORT THE E COLLAR:
Your dogs don’t love you, they fear you! Shock collars ARE inhumane and I agree disgusting. And dogs have been known to go to the vet on regular basis due to shock collars. Why you people use it, it’s disgusting!
Your dogs obey your commands because IF NOT, you’ll simply send electric volts down his neck with no remorse!
Unlike my dogs who get positive reinforcement and are simply ignored when they do not behave properly
Mel,
My dogs NEVER ran outside. They know better. Do there’s no need for me to praise them when they do get ran over. I can be on my porch with them, they can see a cat or another dog passing by but they won’t leave my side. I guess you can call that “miracle dogs”. Call it w.e you want.
Anyhow, NO I do not agree with spanking your kids. Although I am not a mom I have raised my 8 year old brother. Thankfully, with positive reinforcement his grades are great and he’s a great kid. He gets what he wants/deserves when he does what he’s supposed to. Otherwise, he’s just ignored and won’t get anything
Chetco,
I appreciate your great response and strong points.
But as you can see, the majority here are simple civilians that lack the patience and just go for the shock collar because they want it DONE NOW. This is excluding the ones you just mentioned…

CHETCO
I strongly respect your about about those dogs who are TRAINED to be HEROES AND SAVE LIVES.
I hope civilian dog owners can learn something from what you said here:
“I haven’t used it on my own dogs. Their daily lives don’t depend on being totally proofed.
Your dogs’ lives don’t have life or death resting on being reliably trained.”
Greekman, NO thats not what I meant. My dogs can be trusted due to positive reinforcement.
You want to take it the wrong way do so, you’re free to think w.e you want…and i could care less…you’re just arrogant.
I also meant to say that if your just a civilian and your dog is not a working dog trained to save lives then there’s no need to use the e collar..(.IF HE’S AN EXTREMELY AGGRESIVE DOG then I understand your last source is the e collar) positive reinforcement will do. Don’t just run to get the e collar to GET IT DONE NOW because you do not have the time and patience .
Like I said, Chetco couldn’t have made it more clear to myself…the rest have an air of arrogance

I agree, those collars are cruel and must be banned. Anyone getting one for their dog should definitely be required to first try it on themselves, I bet they would immediately toss it in the trash.

Q&A: Bark collars! Any experience?
Question by Mondai S: Bark collars! Any experience?
We recently took in a 10-yr-old yellow lab. He’s crate trained, and he likes to spend his time in there – he probably spent most of his time in it before we adopted him. We’ve been trying to keep him outside more often, but after a little while he’ll start barking to come in. He isn’t barking AT anything, just to get our attention. My mom has recently been looking into buying an anti-bark collar for him, but we aren’t sure which would be best.
While looking, my mom has found collars that shock, collars that make a super-high-pitched sound, collars activated by the dog’s barking and those that are remote activated. Does anybody have any advice, feedback, or light to shed on the situation?
Best answer:
Answer by jeffsgirl
It sounds like this dog may have be neglected before you took him in. He may just be barking to come back in the house because he needs the human contact which he doesn’t get while outside. Just love him and he will settle down with the barking over time just be patient.
I think the bark collars are cruel ~ how would you feel if someone shocked you or the like everytime that you raised your voice.

Shock and Pinch Collars – a good training tool or animal cruelty??
Question by iceblendedmochajavo: Shock and Pinch Collars – a good training tool or animal cruelty??
ok so i was raising my dog (pic to the left). crate training, pulling, and separation anxiety was terrible…
i tried the shock collar and it worked to prevent her from separation anxiety. And a pinch collar worked to stop her pulling. She has never had to wear them since…
But people wold run up to me telling me im torturing my dog. Ironically my dog was better behaved then theirs.
Does anyone else et similar reactions from people?
What do you think about pinch and shock collars?
Best answer:
Answer by agilityteen
I think that both are FINE UNLESS they are used incorrectly.
Some people will give me thumbs down for this, but a shock collar is a good training tool. With this said, it can also be harmful if used incorrectly. I do not recommend shock collars to everyday pet owners, as they seem to shock for EVERY little problem.
Pinch collars are a good product too. Although I have never used one on my dogs, I know people that have and have instructed people with them.
Good luck with your pup, what a cutie!
