Question by DRS: How many of you dog owners let or have trained your dog to lick or “kiss” you in the face or mouth?
Like the one in the Purina ad on this page…to the right! When you think about where that dog’s tongue and face have been all day (including maybe drinking out of the toilet!) Yuk!

Dog saliva is actually sanitary and it actually kills bacteria, so you aren’t kissing a dirty dog! You’re getting kisses from a clean one! If you notice, dogs tend to lick their wounds which serves as an anti-bacterial, since they have no other ways of protecting themselves.

Remi Track #2 part 2 of 2.m4v

Remi the Wirehaired dachshund puppy blood tracking on a 17-18 hr old line part 2 of 2. The line was laid the day before using deer blood collected from the 2010 season, waidwerk scent shoes, tracking collar and leash (and most importantly permission from the local game warden to use legs off the dead deer) but, I was also instructed that no other part of the dead carcass could be taken or used in any way during the training… YES I’M TRAINING THE PUPPY THE LEGAL WAY!!!

hi i just got a new beagle puppy and ive never had a dog that i needed to train before i had a dog before but he was already trained so i need help so could anybody tell me how to house train and regular train a beagle puppy hes 4 to 8 months old and anybody who gives stupid answers like “sucks for you i dont have a answer” any answers like that will get reported and banned from answering any of my other questions
another thing i take my dog out to go hes ouside for about a hour and juist stands there we take him in and he imeitadly pees

lol @ stupid answers. I feel for you there! I just posted a question about my cocker spaniel i got from a pet rescue and the housetraining issues I am having with her because her first owner trained her to use paper! So I am replying just to say, please DONT do that! I am like you, all the dogs I have had before, were trained when I got them. I would say one thing is take your beagle out on a regular basis. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I have a toy rat terrier and she thinks she is alapha dog. whenever she is outside whether she slipped out the door or we are outside with her and there are either neighbors getting out of their cars to go inside or a person just walking by the house she always has to charge at the person,with her hair sticking up on her back, barking as loud as she possibly can. I really do not want to use an electric fence or an electric collar. I have tried several methods and none really seem to work. Is there any possible way to train her not to do this?

This question may be kind of long, but its a serious question.

I have 4 dogs:
2 year old male border collie -gets 2 cups morning, 3 cups night. 1 tablespoon wet cat food.
5 year old male ACD – 3 cups morning 3 cups night. 1 tablespoon wet cat food
8 month old male border collie – 2 cups morning 1 cup night. 1 tablespoon wet cat food
13 year old staffy/lab mix. 1 cup morning 1 cup night – 1 teaspoon wet cat food
The dogs get 1 raw egg mixed in with friday night meal. They each get a joint/vitamin powder mixed in with the meal.
In the summer my dogs are VERY active. Daily they would do:
Morning walk in the pasture – 2 hours average. Off lead. Running and playing. After this the staffy, and border collie puppy would be put in the outdoor run. The older males would come with me to put the sheep out to graze in the paddock, which took about 20 min. I would do a little bit of playing with the flock, practice sorting every now and then and working the separately.
Everyday, I would use the quad and just keep them working dogs at a stead jog/brisk walk (30 mins) down to the lake where they would go swimming play with other dogs, play with kids, etc. Then jog back. So about 4 hours total. The staffy would ride the quad on the way back/there. Daily I do 20 mins obedience with each dog.
Twice a week we did either fly ball or agility. My ACD has PPT training. This isnt including the time put in for regular dog games, like fetch, and normal play with the other dogs at the home.

In the winter the morning walk in the pasture gets omitted, its physically impossible to walk though the pastures in southwest sask winters. But the running though snow, and moving sheep around is increased, and running though snow increases resistance. I have gotten a treadmill I will be putting each dog on nightly to maintain peak performance. Only for about 15mins-30 mins depending on dog. Its also colder, so using more energy for body heat when walking/running/working.
Should i increase my dogs rations? I feed orijin. I mix all variety’s together. If i should increase, by how much? Anything else?

And dog section regular, if it anoys you so much that i say my dogs are intact in my questions, dont answer my questions.
I feed orijin dry dog food, with a little wet cat food mixed in.

No, not necessarily. I would leave them the same. Best thing you can do is watch their weight. If they start to drop, add in some food. If they start to gain, decrease their food. That is what I do with my Malinois and it is a good judge. He is a very stable weight unless his activity drastically increases. He is a healthy weight, so it is easy to tell when he is dropping or gaining. Some dogs will need more in the winter, but you just have to watch them and see.

Did you mean you feed canned food. or did you really mean cat food? Cat food is high in protein but is very bad for dogs as a steady diet. It’s also higher in calories and fat and an easy way to get a dog overweight (not saying your dogs are). It is hard for them to digest though, as the ingredients are made specifically for cats. It can cause serious health problems in some dogs and has a negative effect on long term health. Feed Orijin canned food or mix in some dehydrated raw, that would be much more beneficial for them.

A couple more puppy questions?

Hey DS, me again. Concerned puppy mum. I’ve got a couple of things that I need advice on.

1. We found a puppy food that is better than what we are using, like it has more meat in, it’s more expensive but it’s no bother as long as our dog is happy, which he is not. We slowly changed the food, as you do, and we noticed, the more of the new better food we put in, the less he was eating, yesterday was the day when the food had completely changed over and he barely ate any of it. He wasn’t as excited about dinner time as he was with his last food. His overall behavior hasn’t changed, he’s still his normal cheeky self, not upset tummy or anything like that. It just seems like he doesn’t like it. Should we change the food back to the old type?

2. Puppy doesn’t really like being touched. He will sit near us but when anyone pets him he tries to bite their hand. Only when you actually touch him though, he won’t bite at a hand. He will only let people touch him when he hasn’t seen them for a tiny while, or first thing in the morning. He will let me stroke him for a long time as long as he can chew on my hand. It’s not aggressive but I don’t want it to be a habit obviously. How can we teach him that it’s okay to be stroked?

3. He takes treats really roughly out of people’s hands, he’s only just started doing this today. What should I do?

4. What can I do to keep him active/occupied? He’s a lab x border collie and he’s really clever, he picks things up so quickly but I don’t like long training sessions because he is only young (12 weeks) he is due to have his last injection on Wednesday so he can’t go out yet, what are some activities we can do in the garden that will be fun and educational?

for the puppy food give him varieties and see witch one he likes the most

cause he so shy try massage him it well take stress away. to help the teething problem rub some butter on your hand and let him lick it off it will help teach him not to bite.

since he has border collie and lab witch are two active types of dogs you should prob take him for runs a teach him how fetch a frizz be.

My dog is about 6. He is very smart I just taught him the past to weeks how to jump, beg, and speak. He also knows how to give a high five, shake, roll over, balance food on his nose, smile, and play dead. The one thing I really want to teach him is to walk without a leash. He is always escaping and running around for a long time without letting us touch him. this is important because in a couple of weeks we are going on a trip and I can’t take a chance he will escape in place he has no idea where he is. Please help. I need a link to dog training website or some good directions. Thankx

Keep him on a leash at all times!

He’s not going to learn unless you give him boundaries. Keep him on a leash – especially when you’re out of town.

Question by Cassie-Dane & Bully Breed lover: dog section: which ones?
OK
So here are a few dog-related careers I’m interested along with dog training (my main career goal)

*Dog grooming
*Doggy day-care
*Work @ or own a bully breed rescue
*any other choices you can think of (other than vet or vet tech)

Which one(s) would go better/pay more?

I need to make a good enough amount of money to show and possibly breed great danes in the future
As well as pay for a lot of meds (im on a lot of expensive meds :-/)

With dog training… ill do obedience, agility, and protection dog training (any other suggestions? Which will be more rewarding?)

I don’t want to be RICH
But I want to be able to support myself and my dogs

well i personally want to be a vet and think that is great job, but you said other than that. so out of your choices i would go with grooming of the day-care. i like the breed rescue idea. that would be great. i’m not sure about pay but with the grooming and day-care many people will pay a boat load of money to see their pet happy so i really think it depends on how good you are.
are you asking who like trains and grooms my dog? me!=P i have taught her many things.
