Would a Siberian Husky be a good dog for me?
Question by Rachael: Would a Siberian Husky be a good dog for me?
So I want to get a dog, and I’ve been thinking about getting a husky. I think they are adorable, awesome dogs. I’m not getting one any time soon, but I just wanted to know more about them and see if they are the right kind of dog for me. Oh, and I’m 16 in case you we’re wondering, and yes, my mom said I could get one.
So yeah I have a questions.
Are they good family dogs? There are 5 people in my family. Me, my parents, and my 2 brothers. (12 and ![]()
Do they do good with other pets? I have an old english sheepdog, and 2 cats. My dog loves other dogs, and loves to play and socialize with other dogs. My dog would LOVE to have another dog around. haha. My cats get along with dogs, but they mostly just ignore them and do their own thing.
I know they are really really energetic and stuff, but I have a huge backyard for it to play and run in.
And how hard are they to train?
My mom is good with training dogs. She said she would help me train it if I got one. I don’t know how hard they are to train compared to an Old English Sheepdog, cause those are the dogs my mom is used to training. She used to take my dogs to obedience classes and stuff so I think she’s kind of experienced? She used to enter the dogs in like, dog shows and stuff too.
lol.
I know they need lots of attention, but my mom works at home, and I’m homeschooled, so we’re there all day, almost every day. So it’s not like it would be sitting there alone all day.
I don’t mind the shedding either, my cats shed a crapload, and so does my dog. So we’re used to having pet hair EVERYWHERE.
I heard they like the cold & snow too, and I live in Utah so in the winter it gets really cold and snowy.
So it’s not like it will be living in the heat all the time xP
Anyways, yeah, I love dogs, and I realllyy love huskies.
OH and I would want to get it as a puppy.
And I am serious about it, I would be devoted to training it, grooming it, taking it on walks.
So yeah, I was just wondering if it would be a good fit for me?
I know i rambled a lot,
but
Thanks

Ok, I have an answer for your questions. Yes, all of them. You didn’t actually number them so I will to make it easier to read. I’m jsut going in order of how you asked.
1. Family dogs? Yeah, they make great family dogs. I had one and have five people inmy family. Great, great dog. They are very into their people. And playful. So good with kids.
2. Mine was good with other pets. Loved other dogs and loved cats too. (Too bad the cats didn’t return the love. She’d go innocently sniff it and get scratched.) Socialize well and introduce it properly and there should be no problem. Sibes actually thrive on the company of other dogs. Very social.
3. How hard to train? Not easy and not hard to train either as long as you’re training the dog the right way which means you don’t spend more than ten or fifteen minutes at a time training. Give it breaks. They don’t have a giant attention span. After awhile huskies get bored and just sort of flatten their ears back and go ‘I’m not listening! Hehehe’. also beware, they’re a mischievious breed. They like excitement. And mine was an escape artist as sibes have a reputation for. I’d put her in her pen durin ghte day (nice, roomy, shady, very good little kennel) And she’d start jumping the fence to go wait for us out on the front lawn. Well, we strung some wires over the fence until she coudnt jump it. Then she started climbing up and we’d come home to catch her in the act; this 60 lb husky teetering on the top wire. Just beware of their tricky side.
4. Yes, the siberian husky would be a good fit for you as long as you’re as good a fit for it as you seem.
Remember, during summer keep an eye on your husky you don’t want it overheating. Good luck!

Will try to keep this as short and to the point as possible.
Sibes are full of energy and need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. As long as you are active and can give the dog the much needed exercise, you’ll do fine.
Yes, they are good in families, but they do tend to attach to one family member more than the others. They are very loving and loyal. They can also be real couch potatos when in doors, after the puppy stage(which most of mine lasted until they were 2yo or older).
They are social and enjoy the company of other dogs. As far as the cats, sibes have a strong prey drive. But if it grows up with the cats, there shouldn’t be much of a problem.
A sibe should always be kept on a leash or in a fenced in area. The fence needs to be at least 5 foot tall or taller, they are great escape artists. Never let them run loose, they tend to wonder off further than any other breed.
They are very smart dogs so they aren’t the easiest to train. They do pick up on training quickly, but they will also try you and push your buttons. Don’t try to outsmart them, it can never be done. I would suggest getting a cart or something similar to train it with, when it is older. There are also puzzle toys to mentally stimulate them.
I have had many sibes over the years and they are a difficult breed to initially work with, and the training never ends. I would never give up the time I have had with them.
So, to put it in a nut shell, they are wonderful dogs to have. If you have the stamina and energy(both physical and mental) to take on this breed, then go for it. They do take a lot of work, but it’s worth it.
”Are they good family dogs?”
YES, IF you get a Husky from a REPUTABLE breeder, that breeds them for their Temperament, not for their Looks..
”Do they do good with other pets?”
Yes, they can get along with other animals but would need to be taught to respect your cat. They will chase anything that will run from them..NOT to hurt them, just to get a reaction, play a game of chase..if the cat runs off..a Husky thinks it is fun, if the cat runs under the couch-more fun…he gets to dig under the couch to get the cat..If the cat gets outside and the Husky can also get out–BONUS!!
”And how hard are they to train? ”
They are stubborn!!! You have to let them think that it is their idea to ‘sit’ when you tell them to…Obedience is Not in their vocabulary:)
Get a pup from a REPUTABLE breeder!! Did I mention that before??
”I heard they like the cold & snow too..”
Yes, they love the cold weather. I live in the South and my Husky will lay on top of the A/C vent during the summer but I can not get her to come in the house in the winter…It will be 40* outside and she will lay outside, on the deck, in the sun for hours!!
Training is a MUST, from the day you bring the pup home!
‘She said she would help me train it if I got one. ‘
Then you (or your Mom) must understand that Huskies are NOT food motivated at all…they just want to play…food, treats mean nothing to them…
They Love to play, cause mischief, if they do not have a job to do, they will find something to do which usually will involve running off with your sneakers, clothes, getting into the trash etc…
They can and will escape from anything…house, crate, fenced in yard etc…
You need to keep on top of them and be one step ahead of them at all times…
Huskies are comedians of the dog world, they will keep you on your toes, laughing with their antics and keep you guessing what things they will get into next.
A Husky from a REPUTABLE breeder (did I mention that before) will NEVER start a fight with another dog, but WILL take up for themselves if another dog is aggressive to them! They will NEVER guard your house or protect you from an intruder…They will howl with delight when a stranger comes to the door and show a robber where the good stuff is hidden…
My girl is now 13 yrs old, didn’t slow down until she was 10 years old..she has made me laugh since I first brought her home at 12 weeks of age, brought me a lot of joy, she is the reason for my gray hair, caused me to worry when she got out of the house and I could not find her…
They are a challenge! If I had to do it all over again, would I get another Husky..
YES, they are great dogs!!
Get one from a REPUTABLE breeder..did I mention that before??
