I still can’t seem to figure out why it is so hard for my dogs to comprehend the difference of “outside” and “inside”. One’s grass, and the other ‘was’ perfectly nice wooden floors. Is there any way that would make it easier and faster to potty train these two? One’s 4, and the other’s 1. I understand this is a hard, and somewhat long process.. But i’m trying to keep my parents from giving up and just getting rid of them. Help, please?

Just crate him when you can’t watch him and take him outside every 2 hours. If you don’t let him wander around unsupervised you won’t have this issue.

It’s not difficult if you have the right tools. Crate training is the quickest way to potty train a dog. Dogs who aren’t potty trained should not have the freedom to run around the house. When you can’t watch the dogs, they should be confined. Potty time needs to be on a strict schedule. Dogs thrive on predictability. If they need to go to the bathroom and they know that potty time is soon, they are less likely to pee in the house.
You tell me – if you had to go out to an outdoor outhouse everytime you had to potty, wouldn’t you get sick of it, too?
Everydog can be potty trained. Most of the problems are because the owners are not training properly. Some come from the background of the puppy (BYB & PM puppies are harder to potty train).

Start by cleaning the inside of the house with an enzyme cleaner like Nature’s Miracle. Right now the house smells like their bathroom and they are confused. Follow the directions carefully. You may need to get a black light from the pet store to find all the spots they have used. It shouldn’t be as hard as it sounds like it is.
My dog was completely house trained in less than 2 weeks. I was very consistent with him though.

Dogs are so difficult to pooty train because the dogs has to dont know wen you are trying to potty train them but soon or later they realize wat the you are trying to say to them…so ya they really dont know wat your trying to do because they dont kno that you are trying to potty train them so thats why you should give the dog some time to realize
For dogs grass or floor is no different and if they have been doing this for a long time, it is habit, also they will be causing anger, upset, frustration, getting told off etc, which is weak energy in their eyes, people who arw weak can’t be a good leader ( in their eyes) so they will be anxious.
I would go back to basic toilet training, you also know when they will want to go and normally go so that should be easier and I would also crate train them both, so they are in crates if they are doing it when your not out or in bed, this will give them a den and take the pressure off your family with stress as well as then relieve some of the stress and anxiety from them
Consistency and patience is very important. Take them out like every hour to let them go to the bathroom and praise them when they go. Only scold them when they go inside IF you actually catch them in the act of going. Also, crating in a crate just big enough for them to turn around in over night would be very helpful. (They aren’t going to want to live in their doody)
This option is kind of like a last resort, but it works eventually….all day crating, only taing them out to go outside to play/do their business/eat. When ever they go potty outside, lots of praise is needed.
Also, it could help that when you take them outside, say “go potty” or something along those lines, and whenever they go, praise them…in the future, when they are house broken, it comes in handy when you need to leave quick and have to let your dog out. That way, you can let your dog out, tell them to go, they go, and then your off in like 5 mins. But you might want to leave that for when they get going outside down XD
Anyways, hope this helps…if you mean that when you say one of your dogs is 4 you mean 4 yrs, that dog might take a while to learn. Also, if they are small breeds, they might take a little longer to learn as they tend to be more stubborn about that kind of thing.
there are this things called pee pads, you can get them at any pet store and what it is, is paper that is as big as a newspaper that has cotton on it and is scented and my dogs love it you should also reward them when they go outside and when they go inside on the pee pad that is, or and you can punish them when they go on your floor.
OK, so the problem has been a lack of consistent training, they really either dont understand what to do or they dont respect their owners enough to do it, or they are both males? either way they should know by this age. so heres what to do:
Start by taking them out as often as you can, just putting them out is not enough – you need to be there to praise them for going outside. Everytime they ‘go’ outdoors they need praise.
Normally the accidents should be ignored but since there are two of them and they are a bit older, you need to correct this behaviour – whatever word you use to tell them off, ie ‘no’ ‘stop’ you need to shout that word at them when they are ‘going’ indoors BUT only if they are actually doing it at the time, if you see it afterwards just clean it without fuss, there will be no point telling them after the act.
I would look into crate training them too as this will put them off ‘messing’ when you are not around to watch them, which in turn means that when you get in and let them out they have another chance to succeed and get praise for ‘going’ outdoors.
You will need to be very consistent with them but in time it will pay off.
If you make sure there is a 3x walk a day routine or something similar then they will be less likeley to ‘need’ in between times to go inside and hence more time to get praise when ‘going’ outdoors = faster success all round.
On top of walks, take them outside after meals, drinks, play, when they first wake up, all of this gives more chance to praise them for the right behaviour which will get this sorted out quicker.
Tie your dogs to a leash and tie the other end of the leash to your belt or something so you can supervise them always. Take them out every 30 minutes, gradually increasing the time when they start to get the idea. Use a timer if you keep forgetting. Dogs will usually go potty after they eat, sleep, or play. Watch your dogs always. If they start sniffing the ground, or show the slightest hint that they’re going to go, immediately take them out. ALWAYS PRAISE with treats immediately after they go on the grass!! If you catch them potty on the floor immediately pick them up(they will stop if you pick them up) and take them out. Never scold or punish them when they’re going inside! This will only make them afraid to go potty in front of you.
If you have to go out and can’t take your dogs with you, then crate them. Crate should not be big enough for the dog to walk around it, but just stand up and turn in a circle. Normal, healthy dogs should know to not spoil their sleeping place.
If you dogs are from a pet store/puppy mill, where they are always forced to go potty in their crates, your dogs will never be fully potty trained. But they can definitely improve.
Remember that the magic ingredients are consistency, patience, and praise!!
