Why do so many people think everything their dog does is dominant behavior?
Question by : Why do so many people think everything their dog does is dominant behavior?
Sometimes when I’m laying dog my dog will lay on top of me. I don’t think of that as dominant behavior. He’s just affectionate and wants to be close to me.
Alex – sweetheart. No, babe. That’s not what I wanted you to say. I’m asking why so many people interpret such a wide array of innocuous behaviors from their canine as aggressive and dominant. Oh my Christ, people like you make me lose faith in humanity.

Because people pick up a random word like ‘dominate’ which absolutely no understanding of the true term whatsover but suddenly that becomes the answer to problems. Very few dogs are truly dominant – although judging by some of the owners’ inane questions on this forum I’m beginning to have my doubts. I wonder what questions we’d get from dogs with problem owners ?
All dogs are different. Some are dominant and some are submissive. It is a bit of a dominant move for the dog to lay ontop of you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not there to see, so it could just be cuddles. I actually let my dog do the same, but she won’t dominate over me any other way.
do watcha wanna do!
because it is a show of dominance
it may be the most passive, but it is dominion none the less
just cause the dog didnt pounce on you and start yelling
“im am the leetness” dont mean that its not exhibiting natural dominant behavior
in human terms itd be like that friend who runs up and puts thier arm around your shoulder
and kinda hangs there a bit till thier done greeting you or you shrug them off
what i think your doing is confusing the term “dominant behavior”
your trying to say
“just cause my dog likes laying on me dont mean it think it owns me”
and others are either confused as well and think it does…
or think
“sure, but it does think its higher on the food chain”
as in, you are submissive to your dog, and most likely in general
A lack of complete understanding the the many complexities of animal behavior is the main reason. Many folk see the interaction with dogs as “black or white”, “yes or no” .. rather than the true-to-life and rather huge “gray area”.
I agree….it’s rather difficult for your dog to insist on snuggling up UNDERNEATH you. It’s not dominance, it’s convenience.
