Which dog breed is right for me?
Question by Fate: Which dog breed is right for me?
I’m ready to-
walk it once or 2 times a day from monday-friday and then one big walk on the weekend.
Feed it, Wash it, Clean it, Train it, Play with it.
My parents will help if the dog gets out of hand.
And I will not dress it up as a toy.
What I want in a dog-
A small dog but not super small.*we have two big ones.*
Play full, Energetic, Friendly, Loving, Non aggressive, Friendly to
other dogs.
I’m 14, I’m home-schooled as well. I have much time for a dog. By the time I’m 15 I’ll have about 1500$ for a puppy. I know it takes much time/effort to train a dog but I am ready. I have 2 well behaved older big dogs right now who I love and cherish. I DON’T want to get a play toy, a cute little thing, Or a Fashion Accessory. I want a puppy since it will
be work, And the second dog we got when he was 2 is not playfull from his upbringing.
Dog breeds I had in mind:
West highland white terrier
Scottish terrier
Poodle*Yes I know, But thay are easy to train..Yes?*
And a Golden retriever for a bigger dog.
I’m looking into a shelter as well, Should of added that..I’d much rather save a dog, If I find a mutt puppy at the pound or anything that’s not to much to handle I would get! But I wan’t a puppy for the experince and so my older ones will be safe.

I would recomend a terrier of some sort, most definitely.
Give your answer to this question below!

why it heve to be fillb, get a dog from the pound!
I don’t know why,but I am picturing you with a Beagle..you sound like a fun guy,and Beagles are so playful and ful of energy, and a great size too!
Do your research on all breeds you are considering. They are all different. I would say go to AKC.org
If socialised well around other dogs i think a west highland terrier although all the ones you mention seem to suit what you want from a dog.ahhh its nice to hear a young person thinking before rushing in for a dog.Good luck.
I have six dogs and i thin k you would love a Tibetan terrier or a Lowchen
Congrats. I wish all teenagers were as responsible as you are with a pet. If you have two big dogs already, then you should probably get a relatively robust breed that can deal with rough play. Go for a terrier!
Yorkshire (The bigger ones)
Rat
Westie
Jack Russell
Cairn

punch in your values and see what it recommends…
I have a lab. he’s pretty small, but he’s a runt, so…
you pretty much described him tho.
You should try going to the local pound and speaking with the people there. Tell them everything that you’ve posted and they will be able to match you up with a nice dog. Good luck!
Poodles are great dogs, especially the teacup sized, even though they’re tiny they still seem to think they’re big, and they don’t shed, thats a HUGE plus. Westies would also probably be a good pick, but they require a lot more grooming. Since you’re 14 I might look into something like a Rat Terrier, they’re playful, easy to groom, and I think would be a great companion for a teenager.
You should definitely get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Yeah, I know, that’s a mouthful. XP
They’re not tiny, and a fairly small sized dog. They’re really friendly, and good around children. They’re very loving and sweet dogs, and won’t be a start of any fights anywhere, besides a fight directed towards you for a tennis ball. =)
My best friend has one, and they’re absolutely gorgeous dogs. They love to run around, but don’t need x9999999 walks per day. A nice little ten or fifteen minute walk will do them for a day.
Good luck, and congrats on your new little bundle of joy!
A large breed dog needs at least two hours of exercise a day so they are calmer when inside and to keep them healthy. You will be walking more than that at first when you house break, naturally. Please don’t buy when shelter dogs die. And you left out, Train it. You will be the owner and it needs to be trained by you and disciplined by you mainly as the alpha over the dog. He needs to get along and mind the rest of the family but know that you are the alpha. That is with any breed. A dogs behavior is the responsibility of the owner and any dog can be aggressive if not trained properly and not disciplined if it is something that the dog shows, you have to stop it firmly and quickly. What your describing is the “perfect cloned” dog. You have to work at those qualities. I suggest you do a lot of research and dogbreedinfo.com is a great place to start. Good luck!

I would recommend a Papillion for someone looking for a small breed that is highly trainable.
well labs are good ( not small though like you mentioned) but very lovable and playfull, active, not agressive either, and will go swimming with you =], i had a lab named Cairo she was the best behaved dog ever (and she was only a year old) we gave her to someone who just had there dog die..but anyways, iv’e hear Silky Terriers are pretty good, but im not sure (never had a small dog always have had bigger ones) Border collies are very wonderful dogs too, very friendly. Norfolk terriers would be another dog i’d recommend.
I noticed someone mentioned beagles, although they are very nice dogs, they have a tendency of becoming lazy and or fat, and thats no fun!
sorry about rambling on and on =p
I hope you choose the right dog for you!
a Poodle and West highland terrier sound right for you, but here are more dog breed suggestions…
Pomeranian (Kinda small, and a lot of grooming, but very smart)
&
Beagle
