Question by chelle_138: What is the best advice for training, walking/exercise and housebreaking a 10 week old Beagle puppy? We are first time Beagle owners and would love some basic advice on how to raise him properly. I’ve heard they can be food aggressive, can that be broken since he is a pup?How long does he need to be walked each day? Does playing ball with him in the yard count for proper exercise if a walk can’t be done? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

if he pees set him outside or in a non destroyable or pee room and then when he comes out if he does it again then do the ounishment again
you should walk the dog everyday but for him since he is a puppy just play a lot
if he freeezes or his tail is up tell him firmly no and then take the food away be careful if he already is food aggressive when you take teh food away
I don’t know if I’m giving the best advice because I’m still learning myself, but I have a 13 week old beagle pup at home and every once in awhile I sit next to her while she eats and I put my hand near her bowl, sometimes I even put a finger in her bowl to show her that I’m not a threat and I’m not going to take her food. She pays no attention to me and just keeps on eating. She is not the least bit food aggressive. I walk her once a day and it takes about 30-45 minutes depending on how much she sees along the way that interests her. In the beginning she slept 80% of the day. Now it’s down to about 50% of the day. I really have to tire her out or she gets herself into to much trouble. At night I play with her for about an hour. Making her run, throwing a ball etc. It’s quite funny because by the last 10 minutes she is struggling to run and keep her eyes open while standing up. But I get a full nights sleep after that! To answer your question yes, playing ball rather than walking them is fine because I truly think the goal is exercise and stimulation. No matter how you accomplish it.
First, understand that dogs are pack animals and always look up to the alpha dog. One of you, being his owner should take the role of the alpha or the leader of the pack and the other members of the family should be next in rank and your pup should be the lowest ranking.
Being the leader of the pack, you are the provider of food. Let him eat from your hand in the next few weeks until he is comfortable with this and knows that you are the source of food. Next introduce the other members of the family. Do not feed him while you and your family is eating because leaders eat first and have their fill, the lower rankings eat last.
Mimicking this pack animal behavior is your way of making the pup understand that you and the other members of the family are top ranking and should be respected. When your pup knows his place in the pack, you’ll have no problems with him becoming food aggressive.
The pup’s meal time should also be on schedule and that’s when everybody has eaten. Make him sit and wait, make sure he is calm and not jumping when you give him his food.
For walks, it’s 5 minute per month of age, longer walks is ok when off leash since they control their pacing. So since your beagle is 10 week old, 10-15 minutes is good.
Playing ball with your pup is also good if walks can’t be done. Remember, a tired dog is a happy dog.
