Small dog with constipation problems. What do I do?
Question by Nadia: Small dog with constipation problems. What do I do?
Our 2 yr old Shih-Tzu is having constipation problems. Her bowels come half-way out and she looks very uncomfortable. She rubs her butt on the floor. I read pure pumpkin is good for this kind of thing so I have given her that just today. What can I do in the meantime – just wait? Will she be OK?
She’s been eating fine. Her dog food is the xpensive kind and she drinks lots of water.

What is the “xpensive” (sic) kind of food? Science Diet is quite expensive and it’s crap, so price doesn’t equate to quality.
I recommend switching to Natural Balance and seeing if that fixes things. With the approval of the vet, a scoop of pumpkin every other feeding may also be beneficial.
However, if her “bowels” are coming out, she’s in serious trouble. Bowels are your intestines. This requires immediate vet attention.
If you mean that her poop comes part way out, and this continues for more than a few days, she needs to see a vet. This can cause serious problems if left untreated.
Her bowels come half way out???? There is intestine hanging out / Go to an emergency vet clinic fast.
Forget the pumpkin.
If you mean she drags her but and you can see some anus, then make a vet appt. and have her glands emptied.
Forget the pumpkin.
Take to the vet and ask for some worming tablets (:
or stick your hand up her/his arse
