Raising a puppy?
Question by Stephen D: Raising a puppy?
My family just got a golden retriever puppy(7 weeks old) and we’re just looking for some tips on what to do. We got him a few chew toys, to give to him when he starts biting or chewing at furniture.
We got him a nice kennel and put a dog bed inside it, it has plenty of room for him to move around in also. We put a stuffed toy in it, and put a clock on top of the kennel(we were told this helps calm the puppy while he’s alone in the crate.)
After only having him 2 days, he usually lets us know when he has to go outside to poop or pee, which is good. When should we start obedience training? Should I have the dog fixed(we aren’t going to breed him) ?
Also, when should I expect the puppy to outgrow it’s biting stage?
Thanks in advance for the help

Try beating him! just jokes. maybe after a year he’ll outgrow that phase… If you tire the dog out and try dentabones that may stir him away from chewing
yes kennel training like you are doing is great. great if hes peeing but keep it up sometimes they quit. yes he has to be fixed. call the vet it has to be early. some of those dogs don’t’ every quit i had one that chewed his entire life and chased balls till he died. you never can tell i have one that is now 6 and hes slower but it just depends on which one and how his personality it like
Dogs can be neutered as young as 8 weeks of age, DEFINITELY have this done. It will prevent many future problems and will help curb pet overpopulation. So far you sound like you are making an excellent puppy owner. Obedience training can start any time, i strongly recommend that it be started early. The puppy should stop teething when its adult teeth come in at 4-6 months, but some dogs continue doing it as long as you let them.
just play with it. let him start biting the toys when it’s about 1-2 years old and obedience school at the age of 12 months
Sounds like you have a good start already. First of all, yes, get him neutered! Ask your vet when this should be done. I had mine done at 5 months old.
I believe he can actually start in a puppy class right now. It’s good for socialization and basic obedience. Call a training group and find out the right age – you may have to wait until he’s a few weeks older, as he should actually have all his puppy shots before you take him anywhere, especially around other dogs. Golden’s are very smart and if you keep up with the training, you will have one smart dog!!!
definitly get him fixed if your not going to breed him to avoid a prostate problems they all grow out of the biting stage at different times but start to train him right away and remember his crate isnt a punishment otherwise he will fear it its supposed to he home for him but i recommend that you watch a show thats on national geographic called the dog whisper it will help you with how to train and there is a book call how to prevent dog problems thatwill explain alot and and is easy to understand best of luck
you should start training him if hes that old and also yes you should fix him just in case he gets loose. You should expect him to outgrow his biting when hes about 1 or 2 years old.
Your Welcome
He’s not really “biting”, only playing…And he’ll grow out of it when he realizes that the bites hurt his humans…
As far as training, you can start him right now ! Find a puppy obedience class in your area and get him socialized !
Well ofcourse you should have him fixed…If you don’t plan on getting him his championship in the show ring and then breeding him…Get him fixed…He’ll have a much longer life and be a much better companion for you ..
Sounds like you’re going to be a responsible dog owner
but he won’t just wake up one day and stop it. You need to correct him and give him something that he can bite.
Start obedience training as soon as his attention span is long enough, with just simple things like “sit” and housebreaking.
You should definitely have him fixed as soon as he is old enough. Besides getting another dog pregnant, dogs that aren’t fixed (especially male dogs) are highly likely to run away from home and get lost.
puppies don’t just outgrow the biting stage. Don’t let him bite your hands, even playing. I know it’s cute
good luck and congratulations!
u can start training him with little commands such as no and good boy etc.they are a good smart family dog so he should learn quickly.he should be altered between 6 mts and 1 yr.u have to make sure his testis drop before the nuetering.he will want to chew everything in site for a long time until he gets his new set of chops around 6 mths and even will continue when he is bored at times. get him good chew things so he will have his own and scold him if he starts knawing on the furniture.if he is nipping at ur face or feet etc hold his nose and say no then give him his own toys.hand feed him and then take the food out of his mouth and praise him, then give it back so he will know that he will not have to protect his food and snap when anyone is around his dish.just show him a lot of love and care along with obedience and u will have a good faithful protector for many yrs. best of luck with the new member of ur family
When we got our goldie puppy we too had the clock (it’s supposed to imitate the heartbeat of mother / litter mates) we also gave him a hot water bottle (in a fluffy cover) – he still has it to go to bed with now at 14 months when it’s cold at night.
We started obedience training once he’d had his full set of jabs and was allowed to go out. I haven’t vaccinated mine against Kennel Cough, but one of my friends dogs picked that up at a training course.
Biting – exasperating isn’t it!! Maybe it’s because your puppy is 7 weeks and it should’ve stayed with it’s Mum a week or two longer as she’s supposed to snap him out of biting. Saying that we picked ours up at over 8 weeks and he still did it, after a month or so he will grow out of it, especially if you give him a firm NO and let him know who’s pack leader. He’s trying to test his dominance out on you and you need to let him know that you and your family are the boss.
As for getting him fixed speak to your vet about it when you get him vaccinated, they will be able to advise when is the best time to do this.
Hope this was useful info for you.
Ask the breeder …. though they may not know since they allowed you to take the puppy too young so it will lack primary socialization with its littermates… but heck, if you are going to support through purchase a breeder that would do that, you might as well make them help you with these questions that they should know the answer to before breeding dogs.
