Q&A: why is my dog having problems getting up on her back legs?
Question by songbird61: why is my dog having problems getting up on her back legs?
my dog is 12 years old and in recent days can’t stand on her back legs, she was given a shot and medication by the vet but still continued the same, we took her back to the vet, was told she has arthritis and had to take medication for the rest of her life, this was on monday, today she can’t get up at all and is bleeding from the nose, the vet ‘thinks’ medication might help so now the dog is on other medication…has anyone had this problem with their dog? the dog has had blood test, x-rays etc!

Poor quality of life = euthanization.
She could have hip dysplasia, it’s common among older dogs.
your dog is just getting really old… you may just want to put her down i had a 14 year old english springer and she was just like that but we never put her down and one day when i got home from school i found her dead in the creek she had gotten in it and drowned because of her lack of strength
does not sound too good. Have you spoken to the vet about her nose bleed?
If she is on NASAID’s they could be causing a bleed, but I would want some answers from my vet and sdly, it may mean your little dog is coming to the end.

Hope I am wrong, but be prepared for this and do the right thing if necessary. Good luck to you.
Maybe she got injured or developed arthritis. Dogs usually have arthritis in there back legs when they get older.
How big is the dog? Our 80 lb. Shepard started having the same problems when she was around 10 years old. It’s usually a hip/joint problem due to old age. Very possibly arthritis. Probably a problem you will have to deal with for the rest of the time you have the dog.
your dog is unfortunetly getting to the age where problems start to happen..we recently had to put my dog down at age 14 because she started to slip every time she walked or had trouble standing up also..she had cateracts on her eyes and other weird issues.
you guys are just putting alot of money into helping your dog temperarily..all the x-rays and things they want to do are just going to tell you that she is getting old…the vet did this to us..they wanted to run all of these tests to see what was wrong with our dog..when in the end it was just because she was getting old..i wouldn’t bother doing more tests on your dog..just keep a watch out..if she continues to feel sick or feels like she is in pain, unfortunetly i think it is her time
Yeah, most likely it’s hip displaysia or arthritis. Dogs shouldn’t really be forced to stand on their hind legs anyway.
your dog might just be getting 2 old
take it back to the vet she has a brain problem im sure if the vet refuses to treat your dog then take it somewhere else and sue plz dont wait for more answers on this get your dog to a vet now if im wrong then im sorry for scareing ya but i dont think i am
depends on the breed of dog but 12 is up there for most any breed. Arthritis is just as common in animals as in people and hip is popular in breeds like german shepherds displaysia. The shot or medication from the dr was probably a steroid, or etogesic. Dr’s cannot cure this problem, but only cover it up with steroids. There are glucosamine supplements that help slightly but thats if its caught early on. I have no idea what a bloody nose is from. Maybe a foxtail got stuck in there, or maybe a side effect of the med.
Your loved one is getting old and her health is deteriorating. A little bit of arthritis shouldn’t validate putting her down unless her current state is definitely affecting her quality of life. Keep an eye on her. When the time comes you will know. Otherwise do what you can to keep her comfortable and enjoying her time with your family
well, i did some research online and it seems that the problem could be a number of things, you should go to the vet and tell the vet about everything. see what they can do. I’m not really sure what the problem can be, although depending on the size of your dog and the weight it could be a hip problem from holding her own weight too long, just have her lay down all day to prevent further injury on her hips or legs. BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR DOG!
