Q&A: What is WRONG with CARRYING a SMALL dog?
Question by Camillie: What is WRONG with CARRYING a SMALL dog?
Can someone explain this to me? I’m *really* fed up with all the
“Oh, it’s EVIL that you carry your dog in a purse! Ugh! You Paris Hilton wannabe! Shame on you!”
Don’t tell me you haven’t seen it. Maybe you’ve said it. I just know that it makes me furious. I hate to think that many think I’m a “bad” owner because I sometimes carry my dog in a CARRIER (these dog purses ARE carriers. Don’t tell me you don’t have a carrier).
Here are some of the things that have been said, I’m not naming names….
-”BEANIE BABIES are a better choice,, you do not need a living breathing creature”
-”they’re a Paris Hilton wannabe. who would want to be like that worthless **** anyway?”
-”At that point your dog is a fashion accessory. ”
When someone even *mentions* toting a dog in a dog purse, they get bombarded with comments like the ones above. YA-ers just seem to assume that if you carry a dog, you’re a Paris Hilton wannabe who imprisons their dog in a purse and doesn’t let it walk or get exercise at all. IMO, there’s a right way and a wrong way:
WRONG WAY:
Dog is indeed a fashion ornament. Purchased so it could go with that UH-DORABLE purse of yours. Owned by a little girl who wants to look like the celebs. The purse is not suitable to carry a dog in. Purpose in life is to look cute and sit in a purse for 3 hours while girl shops at the mall.
RIGHT WAY:
Owned by a responsible owner. Travels in purse when going out and ONLY temporarily to serve as a means of transportation. Uses safe purse that is meant for dogs. Let down to walk and play when needed. Doesn’t purse-travel EVER if the dog is uncomfortable. Well-trained and loved.
So, given that a dog is being toted what I deem the right way, would you still hate the fact that the dog is in a beautified carrier(all these dog purses really are)?
And, to make sure I’m keeping it legit, where do you do most of your shopping for dog supplies?
Sierra- I agree. What’s the point of bringing the dog to the grocery store? I’m surprised employees don’t get on those owners for that….
Flying Mop Dog: Nothing’s wrong with letting a dog walk. And nothing is wrong with carrying a dog, either, as long as it’s done without the dog being reduced to a fashion statement.

I just hate it because people take their dogs into grocery stores and shopping malls to the point that they actually have post “NO DOGS EXCEPT FOR SERVICE DOGS”. It’s just gross to bring a dog into a place where people buy food. Leave the dog at home please.

I’m sorry but what is wrong with letting a dog use those four dangly things coming off it’s body that are called legs?
Nothing! You keep right on doing the right thing.
I walk my Chi baby then pick her up when she get tired or I want to take her in the store. You cannot leave your baby in the car; That would be negligent. She likes to be with me as much as possible. She naturally only weighs 4 pounds.
Next time someone has a comment, tell them, “she is little and her leggs get tired before ours do”.
I think it is adorable how people carrie their dogs in bags <3
I would just go to Petsmart.
hope i helped. =]
It won’t get exercise, get obease, and die sooner.
Have fun.
Why bring your dog to the mall with you? Don’t you think that’s sensory overload for the poor pup. All the people, the noise, the perfumes, cashiers, and so forth. Your dog will probably have more fun at home playing in the back yard or living room.
If I bring my dog with me to shop… I make sure dogs are allowed in the store (ie pet stores only) and he is always on a leash on the floor walking. I never carry my dog because it puts him at an unfair advantage over the other dogs.
As for pet stores: An-Jan and Pet Club.
its perfectly normal to carry a small dog ina carrier. I have two small dogs and carry them in a carrier. It MUCH safer than letting them just walk around where people can step on such a small dog. Its being a responsible pet owner. Dont worry about it.
If someone says something just laugh it off and get on with your day.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with using one of those “purse” carriers as opposed to a standard run-of-the-mill pet carrier, but it should also be taken into consideration that the best way is really for your pet to be properly leash trained. Dogs are a pack animal. They love to walk with their pack. However, toy breeds such as Chihuahuas or Toy Poodles and such may get tired on trips longer than a few blocks, so of course these carriers come in handy. I think it is always best for a dog to go with it’s owner everywhere possible, so real pet fanatics should just commend you for being a good dog mom and socializing your pooch!
Nothing is wrong with it as long as you aren’t doing most of the time, it is great to do while you are traveling at airports and bus stations..people are always going to complain about something do not let them get you down.
I get my dog supplies at Petco most of the time.
Proper times a dog should be in any form of carrier:
-Going into a vet office
-Going into an airport
-On an airplane or in a car
Times a dog should be on it’s own 4 legs:
-Inside any pet-friendly store (shouldn’t even BE in no-pet stores, the sign says no pets not purse-pets only!!!!)
-On any type of walking excursion
-Outside
Bottom line, any form of carrier is meant only contain and restrain a dog for TRAVEL purposes- carrying a dog through a shopping mall or pet store is and always will be both damaging to the dog’s mental state, and just plain stupid. Dogs are not meant to be carried, they are meant to walk. Does it sound normal to you for a mother to carry around a 10 year old child 24/7 that is perfectly capable of walking on it’s own? Of course not! If it CAN walk, it SHOULD walk.
Well, once I carried my 20 something pound dog in a tote bag with me and I WALKED 1/4-1/2 mile up the street, they let me in and no questions asked.. I am never doing that again, though I would break my bag and back, my dog didn’t seem to mind though.
Its fine, like every once in awhile my aunt will bring her dog to the mall with her when no one goes with her so shes not lonely and the dog luvs that! She even talks to it… it fine as long as they eat and drink too!!
Petsmart&Petco
I’m sure as long people don’t keep there dog in there forever then I see nothing wrong with carrying your dog around in a doggie purse. I do it with my dog it is fun.
Dogs have four legs and usually enjoy using them. Maybe you would enjoy being carried around in a tote bag with just your head sticking out. Most dogs I see being carted around in bags look miserable.
It is your dog and you can do what you want but that does not mean we have to agree with it.
I do most of my shopping at pet edge.
Most people wanting a small dog “that fits in a purse” are the Paris Hilton- wanna be types who view dogs as little accessories.. and want a small purse dog so they can sneak it into grocery stores and restraunts. They somehow think they will be exempt from the rules because their dog is cute, tiny and fits in a purse! After all, their favorite celeb is toting a tiny, unhealthy Chi around in a pink Prada purse while shopping.. so why cant they?
Very few people use those carriers as a means to safely transport their small dogs… the majority who use those bags are doing it as an accessory thing.
I carry my 3 lb chihuahua in a dog purse only when she jumps in it to go for a ride in the car… most of the time the purse is her personal doggy bed lol … she decided that when i have my keys in hand that she will jump in the purse and bark at me to take her with me … I feel silly carrying her around in the purse so whenever i take her in say petsmart … then i carry her in my arms … if i carry her in the purse she sticks her head out the back of it and barks … only drawing more attention to the 40 something woman with the leopard print hideous dog purse …
dogs no mater what size should be walked becase ya it may look cute, but they have legs and should use them. so stop trying to be a Paris Hilton look-a-like and be your own
