Hey,
My girlfriend has just started her dog grooming course she paid £900 for the course it self and then she also had to buy a grooming kit which was £400 so she paid £1300 in total but she really enjoys it and the grooming kit is yours to keep so its a nice start.
Good luck

£400 for a “dog grooming kit” sounds unreasonable to me. My mother does dog grooming- all she needed were a few brushes, a clipper, a few clipper blades and attachments…none of it I believe would come close to that much money.
I don’t know anyone that is a dog groomer- and I’m a 3rd generation groomer- actually WENT to school for it. Most of the time they started as a bather and found a shop that was willing to put in the time to train them. It took awhile- but then- grooming takes time to learn.
That in and of itself puts more money in YOUR pocket since you are working while you are learning and not paying anything.
where i live in canada there are two schools nearby … both the cost is about 5000 dollars which includes all the equipment needed … when i was in my 20′s i wanted to become a groomer and i did not have money to go to school so i sent out letters to all the groomers in my city asking to be an apprentice … one woman contacted me and i volunteered several days a week for about a year and then she hired me … then i started my own business where i would go to peoples homes and groom their dogs … the first year i spent really gave me a good idea of whether i would like the job or not … as it is not just making dogs pretty, it is dealing with the worst of the worst pet owners who bring in dogs so matted and demand the dog be “brushed out” (which is pretty much torture to the dog) … i personally could not take how people cared for their animals and i changed jobs … i work as a dog walker/sitter now …
Please be aware that there are some crappy schools out there. You want one that’s small, taught by a reputable groomer, and is run as if it where an actual grooming parlor (as opposed to a “classroom”.) You want tons of hands on work in real life scenarios – you want to learn basic clips, advanced clips, shop maintenance, business related stuff, and how to deal with clients. You want dogs that are easy to do and dogs that are challenging.
I attended a course that ran 8:30-4:30, five days a week, for eight weeks. It was taught by a certified master groomer in an actual grooming shop. We dealt with actual clients and actual dogs. We learned canine behavior, handling techniques, first aid, and clipping/scissoring techniques. We where grooming starting on day one and clipping/scissoring by the end of the first week. I believe we where doing anywhere from one to four dogs per day, and i believe my portfolio (before/after photos of every dog we did) totaled over 100 dogs.
Now i’m working in a boarding/grooming/daycare shop and on my way to learning everything i can – i am by no means delusioned into thinking i’m done learning, but i’m getting there. I’m hoping that in the next five years or so i will be ready and confident enough to start on my own certification (i’m aiming for master groomer) and after that i’m going to aim to open my own shop.
I would expect to pay anywhere from $ 2,000 on up for tuition and supplies (not including any other fees you may need to pay – such as rent if you need to move.) Another option would be to find a groomer to apprentice under – you would likely be paid but it’ll be ten times harder and much faster paced than a “school” or “academy” would be.
