Let the dog out often. Praise the dog when they go potty outside. ALWAYS watch your dog in the house… if he looks like he’s going to go, rush and get him outside. If an accident happens in the house, don’t yell at your dog, just clean it up. If you have to take your eyes off your dog for even a second, put him in a crate. Dogs won’t go potty in their own crate. Then, when you take him out of the crate, take him outside before letting him wander around (supervised) in the house.

This way, your dog will not associate the house with going potty. Only outside.

I had my dog completely potty trained (going to the door to let me know when he had to go outside) like this in less than 3 months. I think he had maybe 2 accidents where he went pee in the house… seriously. He is now 2 years old and has NEVER gone in the house.

The key is to take away opportunity. If you can’t watch your dog, put him in the crate. He might cry the first time he goes in if he’s never been in a crate before (just ignore him and don’t let him out until he’s quiet otherwise he’ll learn that he gets out if he cries, and he’ll cry longer the next time, and then he’s learned to cry every time you put him in), but as long as you don’t use the crate as punishment, he will get used to it and even like it… it’s his own little space.

My dog is 2 and we really don’t use the crate a whole lot anymore, but he still goes in there once in a while on his own, especially if he’s scared or is trying to get away from the baby or something.

Sorry that was really long, but I hope it helped. Good luck!

Housebreaking is not hard if you’re just consistent.
