Question by K-9Kara: question for perfessional dog trainers? I have a strong passion for dogs and I want to make a living working with them. I’m very interested in being a dog trainer for schutzhund and personal protection dogs. I want to ask anyone who trains these dogs soe questions about their work. Do you enjoy it? Can you make a good living off it? What is the pay/salary? How many dogs do you train and how long does it take? Do you get alot of buyers? and what are the different prices for a trained dog? Where is a good place to train?

Ok, here we go…NO, there is really no money in just training dogs, unless you are training for something that is highly in demand like explosives detection right now!!! Yes, Sch and sports like it can be fun to train in as long as you realize that it is not a profitable endeavor. How many dogs can you train…I have trained as many as 10 at a time, but, that can get nerve shuttering too. Good buyers depend a lot upon your product, you establish a good rep and I am sure there will be people willing to buy from you. In the end, when it is all said and done, VERY FEW people actually make a living just training or selling dogs. Stay in school and train dogs as a hobby if you want to make a decent living!!! Hope I helped.
The only way to make *reliable* income working with dogs, is to diversify. Such as..A boarding kennel/day-care. As well as Training on-site, or grooming. Those are reliable sources of income. IF you are good at it. Canine behaviorists are in demand at this time, thanks to such as Victoria Stillwell and Cesar., with their TV shows..but you can’t expect that to be an ongoing trend. Our shelter director draws an income from that shelter job, but must supplement with boarding at her own business. Humane Law Enforcement or Humane Cruelty Investigations is becoming more in demand, daily. Animal EMT is a growing field. You can do an online search for schooling for any of the above, and find help in your region. If you wanna email me, with the region you live, I can help you find resources for any of the above. I work at petsmart as a trainer, and its the greatest job I’ve ever had. I enjoy it so much. I’m also a free-lance trainer, and I’ll go to clients homes (so the dog is comfortable and more likely to work with me) and train them there.
Petsmart obviously has separate costs for different classes, ranging from $ 50 to $ 300, it depends on what you want.
When I’m working on my own, I evaluate what the owner wants and needs from the dog, and how long it will take me to get the dog to do what I and the owner want. A typical three hour session can cost between $ 20 and $ 50 dollars, and I have about six clients a day when I’m not working at petsmart.
With my work at petsmart, I train at least six dogs per class, with four classes, so 24 dogs at ‘work’. And my free-lance, I train about two dogs every day when I’m off work.
I live quite comfortably in my apartment, I have about an eight hundred dollar a week check (with taxes from petsmart and no tax from my own personal work).
You can talk to a professional trainer in your area about apprenticing, or going to a few classes to get your certification. Petsmart will actually send you to a college like course and work with you from there, then you’ll work with your own dog to help train other peoples dogs.
