Q&A: pitbull puppy training?
Question by Tony: pitbull puppy training?
hi i have a 8month puppy, ive sort of trained him in the most common things such as sit, down, jump, come, wait (5seconds lol) but the one thing im having trouble with is when i want him to let go of something because he picks and chooses when to do it.. especailly if we are on a walk and he quickly picks up something from the ground he wont drop it i have to do more then wrestle him and he still wont.. but when were playing in the house say tug of war, i have to let go of the rope then show him a treat and say drop it and then 9/10 he will

Pit-bulls are a breed which you want to give lifetime training. You need to have 100% control of your dog on command at all times. Especially a pit-bull, they are a breed which jaws lock. If he doesn’t want to let go he wont. So get him into to professional training asap. good luck

The person above is perpetuating a myth that pitbulls have “locking” jaws which is not true. This has been disproven over and over and you can find more information about this online. No dog has (nor is it possible to have) a “locking” jaw nor have studies found they have high higher jaw “pressure” (which isn’t easy to measure) than any other breed.
Keep practicing the “drop it” command at home.
The main issue you seem to be having is he thinks it’s a game- bring some treats along with you, say “drop it,” and reward him when he does (I don’t like the pure treat method myself, but honestly I refuse to suggest much else to people online when I can not personally show them). You should always be the boss not him.
Puppy training classes are still a great idea regardless even if only for the socialization- Personally I prefer private trainers to the ones at pets mart as the pet store “trainers” only get a week or two of classes on pure treat dispensing training then they get a certificate saying they are a “trainer.” AKA- They generally don’t know near as much as they like to say they do, but again they can give you a basic idea and some socialization for the pup.
And do people seriously still believe that stupid myth that Pits have locking jaws? No this is not true, do not listen to that stupidity, no dog has a “locking jaw”
