Q&A: Know anything about Dog training?
Question by Tilly: Know anything about Dog training?
I have a 6th month old Border collie pup. Shes very strong willed and loves to do her own thing. We have issues getting her to come when called and she can get very aggressive when playing. We are searching for dog training courses in the south hams but havent yet found anything that is near us. Does any one know of local trainers around Kingsbridge, Modbury, Dartmouth areas?

If you are unable to find a dog trainer in your area, then you should pick up either a book or a video on training dogs and start working with the dog immediately.
A border collie is a working, herding dog and needs a lot of training and attention. Either do the training with your dog or place her with someone who has the time and talent to train her.

there are plenty of books abt dog training. buy one
There are some excellent sites for training your puppy on line and they are free. Just do a little home work then follow through with the training. That is how I trained my two dogs and I check back often when the need arises. The library also carries good books on training. The key here is time, consistency and patience. Start by searching for training my puppy then expand from there.
Get your dog on sheep after she’s a year old. You need to let her bones and joints mature. Living where you do, I’m certain that there is an abundance of sheepdog trainers. In the meantime, I’m sure, if you Google, you’ll find an obedience trainer in your area.
Not sure about your area, but there are many sources for training. First, do you have an association for trainers? Here it’s the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Certainly, you can google it and find something. That’s a start. Do you have any pet stores that offer training?
What to look for in a trainer? Are they qualified by an association for trainers? What training method do they use? (I look for positive trainers. Some use food lures. Some don’t. But none should use aggressive, negative training.) Certainly, if they are legitimate they won’t mind giving you references.
Good luck.
Get a trainer through a contact from your vet or just about any groomer in the phone book. Both should know where and who the trainers are. Please don’t send her out to be trained, for what you want you need to know how to do it yourself. An outside trainer can get the dog to mind them, but not necessarily you.
If there is a local kennel club near you……check with http://www.akc.org you can contact them and ask about training. If you can find an agility club, that’s ideal for an active Border Collie.
