Q&A: Is bite work training different from guard dog training (if theres even such)?
Question by justbattleme: Is bite work training different from guard dog training (if theres even such)?
Guard dogs seemed like theyd just naturally do it. Instinct. Bite work requires training. You get responses from wat seems like angry dogs much of the time on yahoo answers but I dont care. Example: “pit bull is two seperate words! Seperate! Why!!!” Before long they dont remember their on the internet. And others will give u “99.9% of the time a strong bark is all you need” as if intruders cant read this too, break in your house and start loading their car, while a dog sits their and barks at them.

I hate this whole subject of “guard dog” and “bite work” training and should only ever be done by those that really know what they are doing and then the dogs should only live with someone that knows what they are doing.
In my book – anything a dog naturally does is likely to be not under control.
Bite work should only be done on command and a dog should release on command.
You need this question answered by Greek as one of the very few qualified to give you a correct answer on this.
Add on – leave the question open as I have just contacted Greek so if he sees it later then he is the best person to advise anything on this subject.
guard dogs are trained as well…99.99% of your dogs will bark their heads off, when actually approached by a stranger with a stick…they will run away pissing on themselves….so to answer your question…NO, dogs will “naturally” bark….but chances are that is as much as you will get out of them
if you need your house guarded…buy ADT or a gun…not a dog
a dog bred and trained to do this job will run you $ 20K at the very least….your back yard bred pit bull is NOT the right choice
Just for you Lorraine…I am not sure what you are trying to get at, but, it seems there is some confusion , so, lets clear it up.
“Natural” guard dogs, not to be confused with a personal protection dog, are mostly unsocial misfits who were born with a nasty temperament and who are good at being behind a fence at some car lot and barking at anyone that comes by. Some will even bite if an intruder gets in, but, these dogs are not good for anything else. You cant live with one as they are not all there mentally, you cant trust one around people, you cant take it anywhere, they are just useless for anything other then being behind a fence.
As far as bite training, well, any dog that is properly bred and selected for a job that requires bite work, be it sport or real life, cost SERIOUS money. ALL dogs that you will need to depend upon will need bite work training, after being tested for the correct temperament. I will tell you that ALL that training is also VERY expensive, in the thousands, but, if you have the right dog and the money, find a serious trainer who will eval what you have and then spend that money training your dog.
I will tell you this, don’t depend on a dog to naturally protect you against a real life threat unless the dog has been trained and proven to work under the stress that real life brings when it happens that your life is in danger. Hope I helped.
If I were trying to CREATE a “guard dog”, I would do it like this. Chain him up, feed him, and have people torment him daily. At 12 months old, he’ll likely rip the hide off anything that gets close enough. A “natural” guard dog doesn’t need to be trained. They bark, show teeth, chew on the fence, etc. As you’ve been told, these are social misfits….OR are completely motivated by fear. Although a fearful dog can be obedience trained, there is no way to trust them when the unknown arises. At some point, they are likely to bite someone for no reason….best to leave them at home. “Bite work training” is what you do with a dog that has all the genetic input. They are sound, social and strong (nerves). These dogs are exceptionally safe and easily managed. Training the “natural” dog will most likely get you AND someone else bit.
Imagine a skinny, crack dealing gang banger, raised on the streets of Compton….compared to the offspring of Evander Holyfield and Freeda Foreman, sent to UFC training school. Is it getting clear now?
