You should contact some professional trainers in your area, and see if you can get a personal interview with one of them. Having a primary source like that would most definitely WOW your teacher/prof! Check your yellow pages, and make some calls to find the trainers who help with the K9 service in your town/city. My trainer does this type of work….. if you want, you could even check out his site and email him your questions, I’m sure he’d be more than happy to help, or even give you some contacts, point you in the right direction, etc:

Most professionals (especially dog people) would be MORE than happy to spend some time talking about what they do, and why they love it!!

Your best bet is looking into schutzhund trainers, i am sure there is plent of websites if you google it.
I am a k-9 officer if you want to give me a email i can answer those for you and even give you some laws and such pertaining just to k9 handlers
Yes, as one of the above posters stated.. your best bet is in fact to research Shitzhund (spelling??) training centers
Don’t look at Schutzhund. Schutzhund is a sport that both professionals and amateurs compete in. It isn’t police training and it isn’t personal protection.
Going to a Schutzhund training club would be like going to a local Karate Dojo where little kids learn basics when what you really wanted to know about was professional boxing.
Just find some people you admire on line and approach them.
Hi!!!
As far as your questions for your report, the answers are really simple.
If you are a private trainer, you will travel and work as many hours as you need to.
You will work overtime as needed to accomplish your goals and make your contract requirements.
You need to understand that there are not that many trainers that are qualified to offer/sell police dog prospects to depts.
The ones that are, will do whatever they can to sell as many dogs as they have to make a living.
There is no special education needs for this job, a solid back round in dog training is a good thing to have.
It is a competitive field because there are many people out there trying to be dog trainers.
Hope I helped.
Look online at coastaldog.com and email the guy Rick. Then look up the sport of Schutzhund.
