Q&A: How to train puppy not to jump up on us while we eat?
Question by The Rock Climber: How to train puppy not to jump up on us while we eat?
I have a Treeing Walker Coonhound about 5 months old. We gave her table scraps one time which was a bad idea. How can we train her not to jump up on us while we eat? her nails are sharp and sometimes she accidently scratches us trying to jump up.
she already knows down and stay. She just refuses to do it when we say it.

Put her outside, in a crate or another room while you eat. (with her own food)

spank him when he does it, sounds mean but it works, also throw really hot food on him like cofee, bacon, or burgers straight from the grille
You train her to Down/Stay outside the room. Best thing. Crate her if you have to.
one trim her nails then file them or maby u can even giv her booties. and to answer you ‘re question u hav to set boundries. everytime she sets foot in the dining/kitchen tell her bad dog and spank her and scoot her out. now when ur having dinner u hav to lock her up. it’s the best way to train her.
When she jumps up, say ‘No!’ in a firm commanding voice. If she doesn’t stop, drag her away from the table. Or, just keep her in a pet crate during dinner time if you have one. If she just begs, don’t look at her whatsoever.
This worked/works for my two dogs! Good luck training your puppy!
My dog already understood the sit command, so I let him wander the area as we ate, but ignored him as we were eating. If he tried to come close i told him to sit, and he would sit and stare as if he was getting something. Then after a minute he would get bored and wander away. It takes a while to get used to, but they’ll get the message without you having to yell and chase them away. It probably depends on the temperment of your dog too. Be consistent with “off” or “down” or whatever command you use. I sometimes even feed my dog at the same time I eat so he has his own to eat and won’t be so interested in what i’m doing, although he eats a lot faster than i do.
I had a baby gate in my kitchen, everytime I brought food to the dinning room, I would lock my lab in the kitchen w/ a baby gate, now everytime I bring a plate into the dinning room, she goes straight to the kitchen and lays down w/o me having to tell her or using the baby gate. What ever you decide, another room, crate, or outside…just make sure you are consistant each and every time. there is nothing that gets on my nerves more than a dog at my feet drooling while I am trying to eat.
Ever hear of a CRATE or another room?
I growl at my dog when he is too close to the table and has his eye on the food. Or, you can put him in a seperate room with his stuff while you eat.
I think you asked a much longer version of this in another question
At mealtimes, put a leash on her. Ask her to lay down at a respectful distance from the table (2-3 metres). If she won’t lay down, give the leash a quick tug towards the floor. Don’t give up, or move away until she has lain down and looks relaxed (i.e. not like she’s waiting to spring back up again). Then get up and go over to the table and have your meal. If at any point (from immediately after you have gotten up to go to the table) she gets up, immediately go to her and take her back to the same spot. If she manages to get over to the table and starts jumping up, tell her “no” firmly but calmly. If she keeps jumping, you can either (1) poke her firmly on the neck/body (not in the face) or (2) take the leash and give it a quick tug to the side or down. The purpose of this is to snap her out of her excited state, just like you’d poke someone to catch their attention. Lead her back to her spot and make her lay down again.
The first few times it will be a pain because she will have to learn that’s where she’s supposed to say and YOU are the boss. You mustn’t give up because she will realise if she can hold out long enough she’ll get what she wants. After a few times it will get easier and eventually she will just go there whenever you sit at the table! It doesn’t always have to be the same person getting up to take her back, as long as you use the same technique and stay calm (no shouting, kicking, etc).
Also, if you are not already doing it, take you dog for a long walk (min 45min) or run (30min, you can use a cycle or rollerblades) in the morning to drain her energy. You have an active breed that is not suitable for apartments so you will have to put more effort into meeting her needs than if you had a lazy breed.
Hope that helps!
It only takes one time for her to remember where the table with the goodies is at. From nw on do not allow her access to that area at meal time. Instead get a dogie or baby gate and keep her as far from the eating area as possible. As she gets older she will realize she only gets her food at her meal time. Never ever give her table scraps because dogs cannot digest human foods like humans can. It can cause serious harm as well as shorten their precious lives.
