Q&A: How do you teach your pet tricks?
Question by lioness9012003: How do you teach your pet tricks?
I’m wondering how people teach there dogs tricks. I saw a cool dog show on last night and it was very entertaining. I never had a dog I’ve always had a cat. But I’m wondering how you get your dogs to do that stuff. Does it take a long time?? How does the dog understand what to do and when to do it??

It sometimes depends on the breed of the dog, how quickly or indeed if they ever will pick up tricks. I had a collie/German Shepherd cross and the only thing he would do was ‘sit’ or ‘lie down’, I tried to teach him to give a paw but he wasn’t interested. When he died, I got a Hungarian Puli, these dogs are like the Einstein’s of the dog world, they are very clever. I started as soon as he was a puppy, and just repeated commands using hand signal as well, so I would say ‘SIT’ and point my finger upwards, for a while he just looked at me, but when he eventually sat I gave him a treat immediately, I did this constantly until he realise that when I said sit, he done it and got a treat. I did the same thing with everything else. He does, DOWN, ROLL OVER, and as he has two different coloured paws he also does GIVE ME A WHITE PAW, GIVE ME A BLACk PAW.
He is still only 10 months old and I am trying to teach him new things all the time.
