like they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
The exact same way you do when they’re young.
I was still teaching my elderly GSD tricks when he was that age. It just takes a little more repetition and I used healthy treats (Benny Bully’s Liver Chops) so he wouldn’t be eating anything crappy.
The same as you would teach a 10 week old pup. No difference in the training – other than the 10 yr old would probably have a better attention span!
You just had an australian terrier x toy poodle? YAWN!
The same way you’d teach any dog tricks. With repetition and treats.
Well it depends on what kind of tricks you are talking about. To train a dog to sit, stay, etc., you can offer treats. Like bits of milkbones, kibble, or the like. Sometimes you have to help the dog achieve the desired results and then reward and praise.(Example- In order to get a dog to sit you may need to help them understand by slightly pushing the rear down while saying “sit” firmly. Sometimes you may help by assisting the legs to bend in. Always be gentle, if the dogs thinks this will bring pain or yelling, it will not work) You should practice this daily or at least several times a week. In general dogs want to please and if they understand what you are asking, they are usually willing.
Once your dog seems to understand what you are asking and what you expect from them, you should be able to switch from a treat to praise alone. You must refresh the dog from time to time to maintain it.
Good luck and remember to have fun!
You cant teach a old dog something new they just don’t catch on.
