Question by Jordiek: How do I get my dogs to not bark or pull on the lead when another dog goes by? I have two westies both aged 2. As a puppy they never went to socialization classes so have almost no experience with other dogs. Whenever I take them out on a walk if another dog goes by or is near they bark and pull on their lead. How do I stop them from doing this? Please help…

Assuming they’ve had basic obedience training, I would probably start by calling them to me and asking them to follow some command – sit, down, heel, whatever – and reward for their correct response. Do this every time they start barking or pulling. Correct them if they ignore you.

Sounds like my black Pomeranian Charlie! He attacks every thing on walks! Make them sit until the Dogs have past, use the biting thing with your hand just like the Dog Whisperer dose, it really worked with Charlie!
This is easy, but takes lots of practice, and patients. You see, I have a dog and I go through the exact same thing. I find what works best for us, is if you see the other dog walking by, distract your dog with a favorite toy, or treat. This is what works for us. How I learned this is we have had a dog trainer come to help with our dog and she is AWESOME. So as an example, if you are outside with your dog and you see someone you know that the dog will bark at, then find a way to get the dogs attention until you think it is OK and as the dog is being good, reward the dog, but if the dog is not listening, then do not. One final example is if the dog is barking and you want it to come in the house, no matter what,, don’t show him your angry, because if you do, he/she will continue to not listen
