Q&A: Does anyone know of a good way to train your dog if you can’t take a class?
Question by Dee G: Does anyone know of a good way to train your dog if you can’t take a class?
I want to train my dog but the closest training place is 50 minutes away and they only have 1 beginner class on Sat. I also work most Saturdays. I have read some good books and bought a video but what do I do when I have questions. How do I know if I am training her right?
Best answer:
Answer by not your average black girl
Positive reinforcement (ie), treats when she sits or gives you her paw, rolls over, etc. Watch the videos & read the books. Good luck!
What do you think? Answer below!

You know you’re training her right if it’s working of course…
A book and common sense is all you need.
I use 3 methods:
Positive Reinforcement for when the dog responds to the training and obedience he is learning.
I use the NILF (nothing in life is free) method to keep my pups sharp on their training, examples are must sit when putting pinch collar on for walk, must sit-stay at the back door before I let them in, must down stay before I feed them. This keeps them obedient and their training fresh in their heads. Make them earn anything they might want.
Lastly I use a lot of the dog psychology Cesar Milan talks about and even some of his methods. Mostly when introducing my dog to new things or for training to certain stimuluses i.e. when walking my dogs and another dog approaches.
if she listions to you ur training her right
Here’s a variety of advice for training http://dogtime.com/training.html
One of the most important is socializing your dog with other animals and people in general.

I would go to http://www.pawsawhilevtc.com. They are an online training site that are great. They have online videos to watch and you can download the lesson plans to follow along with or refer back to. When you first sign up you get their beginner obedience DVD free. The best part though is that the site is interactive. If you have a question you just email them or post it in the forum and you have an answer within a few hours if not less. If you post to the forum other users will help you out too. You can also send them video if you are really having a problem. The site also features a blog, a service directory and many other informative links. The price is right too. To take a class in my area was $ 160 for 7 weeks and I also had to go on a Sat because nothing else fit my schedule. I signed up with Paws Awhile Virtual Training Camp for 3 months when I got my second dog and it was less than $ 30.
