Q&A: Could someone explain puppy vaccinations please?
Question by Indi Whippet: Could someone explain puppy vaccinations please?
As you know i got my puppy 2 weeks ago, he is now 16 weeks old, i have a vaccination certificate for him which says he has had 2 rounds of DHPPi and LEPTO 2, is that all that is required? I am wanting to take him to puppy socialization classes.
I am in the UK.
OK, just phoned my vets, he is fully protected, never had a dog vaccinated at vets before so did not understand the card but he is ready to go……..

No, thats not it. The puppy needs to complate the whole cycle fo vaccinations before being walked or socializing wiht other dogs.
Take him (with his papers) to the VET
I’d hit him again…today…before I took him out amongst a bunch of strange( & lord knows how well vacc’d) dogs. That’s close quarters w/plenty of icky stuff going around.
Probably OK but…hey, cheap($ 6 if you DIY) insurance.
First shots should Begin at 6-8 weeks and every four weeks after until 3 series are complete. During the last set he will also receive his rabies shot (Usually at 16 weeks). And then one a year. A second rabies shot is given one year after the first. Immunity generally last 7 years after the second shot depending on shot given, make sure you ask your vet how long immunity will last as per kind of shot. Most boarders, trainers, classes require all dogs to have all shots including Bordetella (Kennel Cough). Find a new vet and get a second opinion.
ln the UK you only need two lots of vaccinations, normally at 8 weeks and then two weeks later at 10 weeks.
So as your vet said he’s fully covered. Have you also checked that his worming is up to date as well?
Only a vet with your dog’s complete medical history can determine which vaccines should be given and when they’ll be most effective. In general, however, shots begin when your dog is four to six weeks old and will continue until he’s more than 16 weeks of age. Many of the most important vaccines can be given together, in what’s often called the DHLPP vaccine. Some, like leptospirosis and rabies, require annual boosters that will be a routine part of a checkup.
