Q&A: Any tips on bringing home a new pit puppy to my 5 y/o pit?
Question by Jessica: Any tips on bringing home a new pit puppy to my 5 y/o pit?
I am thinking of getting my husband a puppy for his birthday. We already have a 5 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier that we love so much. He is extremely obedient, great with our three children, and very loving. He gets along great with other dogs when we take him to the dog park, and is not the least animal aggressive. He does suffer from some separation anxiety when we are gone from the house, but it is not often that we are both not home for extended periods of time. We are looking at getting a female pit bull puppy. Any tips on bringing home a new puppy to our dog? Does it matter if we get a male or female? (Our dog is fixed, and so would the new puppy)

sounds fine, but really to be absolutely sure you should let your current dog “choose” the puppy. because if you bring home a puppy and they dont get along, your basically screwed.
arrange with the person who you are getting the puppy from to let your dog meet the pup and see how they get along. and see if you can organize like, a 2 week trial ?
goodluck

Pick an outdoor spot that isn’t your yard, like a neighborhood park. Your resident dog is less likely to feel territorial on neutral ground, and if the dogs are outside they can avoid each other if they want, which helps keep the situation calm.

Allowing them to meet on neutral ground is the best way for them to meet. Or if the Puppy is older and fully vaccinated, meet at the dog park. He is already used to meeting new dogs there and you can see how he acts with her. We always walk the dogs together also before taking them home. This shifts from the playful, just met mindset to more of a pack mindset.
Also, a female is a great choice for a second dog. With pits, they say that when you have 2, have one male and one female. Although I have 2 females, they were introduced much younger than your male will be. Good Luck.
