Q&A: Any tips on Beagle puppy walking?
Question by Maxim D: Any tips on Beagle puppy walking?
My Beagle puppy is a very reluctant walker. He went for his first walk 2 days ago. He will lay down and sniff around and refuse to walk by my side. If I pull on his lead, I feel like I am choking him. Is this normal behaviour? How can I encourage him to walk by my side?

Bring treats with you and whenever he is comes to your side praise him and give him a treat. He’s a puppy though so expect it to take a while for him to figure it out.

What I do is just ignore him and walk with his leash. Even if he doesn’t want to, just pull on it. You have to show him that he has to listen to you and walk when you want him to.
When he does walk by himself without a huge struggle, give him treats and praise.
Don’t worry, his collar won’t choke him. He will walk before the collar chokes him.
I had the exact problem with my beagle puppy “Norris”. (Yes, I named him after Chuck). I switched from a typical leash/collar to a harness, so there is no danger of choking him, and he seems to take to it easier. Also, try a little running to get him excited, Beagles love to run and chase you. Now, if only I can get him to stop crying 1/2 the night.
Small dogs do better with a lightweight harness. In an emergency you can actually lift them up by it! It saved my chihuahua’s life one time when a big dog came charging him.
A harness releases pressure on it’s neck, so you have better control over your new little one!
How old is he? Is he comfortable wearing the leash/collar?
Often they have to wear it around the house for a few days to get accustomed to having the leash and collar on.
