Puppy shots and walking outside?
Question by : Puppy shots and walking outside?
My puppy has had 3 sets of shots. My vet schedule shows 4 (the final being dhlpp I think+rabies) with the 4th at 16 weeks. Puppy is just about 15 weeks now and had her 3rd set of shots over two weeks ago.
My problem is, she has a lot of energy. The last 2 mornings, I took her on short walks on the sidewalk around my complex. I kept her away from grass. But I feel worried about it. Being in an area that has dogs walking around (not a terrible amount, but it is an apartment) I just wonder if it is the right thing to let her walk. I do not want her to get sick. She was sick when I first got her from parasites and it was awful.
On the other hand, she was really happy on the walk. She pranced down the sidewalk. Didn’t pull the leash. Didn’t react poorly to people or cars. She was so good. And she has been much calmer throughout the day after the walks.
So, should I continue walking her on concrete areas or should I stop and just wait until after the 16 week vaccine, which isn’t that far off.
She is a pug so she is smaller. But she has a ton of energy and not a lot of space to run around in my apartment.
Thanks for the answers. It just seems strange to me that they are doing 4 shots (my parents lab had 3 at the same vet) and in the UK they only do two.

I would just wait for the shots.
Puppies and diseases are unpredictable.

All dogs, but especially puppies, can become just as worn out by mental exercise as they can by physical. Do a ton of training with your puppy. Don’t just teach her new things, but work on making everything you’ve taught her PERFECT. Play mentally stimulating games with her. Games like hide and seek, find it, things like that.
I would just wait. Do what you can in your apartment to help lose her energy. Throw toys around and play fetch (if she knows how to) just see what you can do, just to be on the safe side so you don’t need to go to the vet with bad news. Good luck and have fun with your puppy! =}
Our vet has told us that as long as they have had 3 puppy shots with the parvo in it then they are ok because they are protected. Alot of vets require only three puppy shots but then some require 4. Pugs are very active little dogs and do love to be walked and exercised so it should be fine to walk on the ground.
Playing mental games, like one person said, is good advice. Find it, hide-and-seek are great games to play to stimulate and exhaust her.
However I think you’re fine with what you’re doing. I just took my puppy to a veterinarian hospital that has been AAHA approved since 1990 (and what a successful and reputable hospital it is. We found reviews on the place, and they offer some of the most state-of-the-art surgery procedures out there…) and the veterinarian told us that once he’s had his 3rd set of shots for a week he can be taken to parks. We asked this same question because our puppy is a bundle of energy and we so badly want to take him out on some longer walks.
You can call around at a few vet offices in your area and ask for their opinion. Or even call veterinarian offices in larger cities… there is more competition in larger cities, thus constant rivalry in knowledge of their practice.
If the shots aren’t too far away I would just wait because if she catches something then she will be confined to the house even longer and you wouldn’t want that! When I first got my puppy we had to do the same thing! I would try to play fetch with her a lot in your house to get her more sleepy and calm!
I love pugs by the way!!
So cute!!
Good luck!
