We have a golden retriever puppy who is about 3 1/2 months. We are training him to go to the back door when he needs to “potty”. He is doing okay I guess. He still has maybe one or two accidents a day. Normally just pee. No biggie. We’re getting new carpet in a couple of months. Just wondering if anyone had any tips??
for the girl saying “take him to the doctor” what the heck for?? He’s just a puppy learning where to use the bathroom. We’ve only had him maybe a month. Besides he has been to the doctor. Perfect bill of health!
By the way, YES we give him TONS of praise when he goes outside. I’m a stay at home mom so I offer to take him out every 30-45 minutes or so plus anytime I see him start to sniff around (usually a good indicator). He’s a great dog!! (As I knew he would be)

I recommend crate training. I am traing 2 pups now and its working great. I also trained a Rott and a Poodle in the past the same way. If you have some extra cash ($ 10.00) than get the e-book from this lady on training. She is awesome!! Good luck! =]]

Are you keeping him in a crate while you’re asleep and away from home? If not, I recommend getting one. It helps a lot. I guess you’re giving treats and/or praise when he does potty outside. Just make sure you take him out first thing in the morning, then about 15 minutes after he eats, then about ever hour or so. I’m sure you guys are doing a great job already. Good luck! Goldens are wonderful dogs.
It sounds like you are doing everything fine, just keep doing it. Consistency is important when training animals because they need to know what to do, what not to do, and when to do it. If that makes sense…Also, it is a good idea to give them a treat once they go to the door to potty and once they come in. All dogs want is attention, if they see this gets them the attention, they will be more likely to do it.
pads are a good idea. if you use pads, make sure that you gradually start moving it towards the lawn, or where you actually want her to pee and stuff (im assuming thats not inside, right?) what i think is the best idea though is that you watch him as much as possible, and whenever you see him sniff the ground as if to find a spot to mark her territory, then simpley pick him up and take him to the bathroom place. keep praising him if he does the correct thing. if you keep doing it to the same area, hell get the point. also if he pees somewhere you dont want him to, only scold him if you see it happen. i used to be obsessed with puppies, so i kno lol
It sounds like you’re doing everything right so far. Are you using a kennel at night and when you’re gone? Also, when I was training my rottie I kept him on a leash at all times when he was out of the kennel. This had several good effects.
1-he couldn’t sneak off and potty where I didn’t want him to.
2-he couldn’t chew on “unapproved” toys like shoes, furniture, etc
3-he bonded very closely with me which made future obedience training very easy.
