Question by LEIRBAG D.: Potty training dogs question? So, school is gonna start and im getting a dog. I heard that if you do crate training you have to take dogs out every 20 min when their puppies, but then I can’t do that since I’m going to school for 7 hours each morning. Any tips? should i switch to paper-training instead which will have bad effects in the long run?

7 hours is too long for a puppy to be left alone, for many reasons. If you don’t have someone who can come let him out at least once while you are gone you should look into a dog walker or doggie daycare.
Suprisingly you can actually LITTER TRAIN a puppy! You can buy a speacially made litter for dogs and when you take the puppy out of it’s crate, put it in the box and eventually the puppy will go in the box. When he/she does this successfully calmly praise it and right after it gets done, give it a treat it. If you see the puppy using the potty on the floor or crate, scream “Ahhh!” just loud enough to interrupt the puppy and place it in the litter box. But never use discipline to correct your puppy accidents. Use positive techniques when the puppy goes in it’s designated area or outside. You can also potty train the pup with paper or puppy pads. Just remeber some breeds are harder to train then others and potty training WILL NOT happen overnight. Do not give up and good luck! I hope the puppy will be a part of your family for years to come! And please spay or nueter it!
