my dog just had puppies 4 weeks ago how old should the puppies be until i start feeding them puppy food?
Question by Lena M: my dog just had puppies 4 weeks ago how old should the puppies be until i start feeding them puppy food? does anyone know what is the best dog food to feed to the puppies?
Best answer:
Answer by kimbertalkennel Not until you sell them which is 8 or 9 weeks. They will not be ready until then. That is why they sell the puppies at that age. 4 weeks is too young for dog food. At this age they should be feeding on the mom yet. Around 5 or 6 weeks you can give them canned food, which is better and easier for them to digest. Not until 8 or 9 weeks you can give them dry food.

you should start now! get some high quality puppy food [no IAMS, _____ CHOW, or BENEFUL!!] and soak it in warm water and mash it up so its like the consistency of cream of wheat
You are the going to be the victim of bad answers! Anyone that says that you have to wait till 6 weeks does not know what they are talking about. You should be starting now. Soak some puppy food in warm water and mix in a little wet food with it. You should just leave it out and let them explore it at this point. They should just be exploring the concept of food right now. The should still be getting milk until 6 weeks. Over the next two weeks you should very slowly be adding less and less water and wet food until all they are eating is dry food. Six weeks is way to long to wait to wean them and I would be very surprised if the mother dog did start snapping at them very soon every time they try to feed from her.
Salt & Pepper, Apricot has it correct. You should be consulting a mentor for your breed. With mine I start between 4 and 5 weeks. A good puppy chow blended with goats milk (note: not dairy milk) then heated slightly will generally do the trick. Goats milk has much of the same nutrients that a dams milk produces. In addition, you should have been giving cottage cheese to the dam twice a day. This helps stimulate and produce milk. They will still nurse over the next week or so depending on the dam. She will start refusing and you will need to watch for this as this will help let you know when she is no longer nursing. Though much depends on the breed it also depends on the dam. Many times they will wean off their pups sooner other times later it is not necessarily breed related. Good luck. Also, you should have already wormed the pups and dam. This should be done at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age with the dam being done at the same time.

they should ween around 6-8 weeks.
I’d say about six weeks but it depends on the breed,
the larger the dog the longer it takes to mature.

Talk to your breeding mentor or vet about all of this.
