Question by Misty_00: I’ve adopted a Doberman pup and I think he’ll be VERY hyper. Any tips to keep a pup calm?
I’ve reserved a Doberman puppy who is about six weeks old, and I will be picking him up from the breeders in a couple of weeks. I’ve never owned a puppy before, and am doing all of the research (reading training books, talking to dog owners…). I am planning to enroll my pup in puppy obedience school at the end of the summer after he and I have spent some time together (and he is about 4 months old). During my research, I’ve definitely come to understand that puppies are BALLS OF ENERGY! I am very willing to accommodate this, but I also understand that there is a difference between an excited puppy (who loves to play) and an overly hyper, frantic puppy (who cannot control himself wherever he is). If he is a “crazy” pup and I don’t know how to control it, I’m afraid he’ll make our summer very difficult. I’ll take him everyday to the park to run and exercise, but is there anything else I can do to help him develop into a semi-obedient (and controllable) pup who listens to me?

Basic training…the sooner the better! Lots of exercise!!!
Give your answer to this question below!

take your pup for walks play fetch, let em play w/ other dogs (also good for socializing dogs) go some were to burn that energy
You may want to check into puppy classed which ussually start at 8-10 weeks.
Bye the time the pups 4 months it’s a little harder to break teh bad habbits.
Also getting teh pup fixed at 5-6 months old should also help
I don’t know. My puppy (a shih tzu) has never been calm. I’ve been trying to find the same answer. He never stops running and jumping around. We are going to try to take him to petsmart to get into one of the dog training programs. I don’t know if it works yet, but it’s just one of the possibilities.
Get him into classes and maybe neuter it.
I have a Doberman also, they are very hyper. What you need to do is take him for lots of walks, train him, and every once and a while take him out back and chase him, and make him run after you until he cant run anymore! Thats what i did, and it worked out perfect!
Good Luck!
Well u should obviously get the attention of the puppy first and then train him. Keep him occupied with a treat or something. If he is still hyper let him run around till he wastes all of his extra energy.
Congrats on the Dobe! I have one and they are just wonderful dogs.
Being a doberman it will have lots of energy and tend to be easily exciteble but as long as you expose it to lots of people and lots of other dogs from an early age it will grow up healthy body and mind and will begin to mellow as it gets used to these kind of things. The perfect way to do that is to take it on long walks around he neighborhood and take it to the dog park (After it has got its shots) to run off leash and play with the other dogs. This will help it get used t all types of people and dogs and insure you have chipped away at its energy level so it does not get bored and destructive.
Also as others have said teach it as many tricks as you can. By doing this it will get used to following your orders and will make him much easier to control.
I have three Dobes. they are normal when pups. Spend lots of time with them and they will be fine. After they mature they are very laid back house dogs. They love to lounge around. Dobes like lots of toys. Also a solid rotuine helps a pup. Make sure you use a crate.
I have 3 dobermans now I use to have 4 but lost my female. You say your pup is 4 months old you need to put him in class now. believe me I know.I put mine in class when they were 8 weeks old. The sooner you start class you will see the difference in your pup.Dobermans are very strong willed and you need to get that under control as soon as possible.they have to treated with gentle hands but also be very firm with him its like training a child you have to be constant with the corrections if you don’t he will never respect you or the leash. They have a mind of their own and you have to teach them how to use their mind they are always on the go if you don’t keep them busy they will invent their own games. They aren’t hyper they are just full of energy.
Its been said that their brain is close to a humans brain and there times you have to out smart them and that can be hard. But you will find that when the training starts you will have a very obedient dog. Cause he will loyal and protective. But he has to scoialized or you will have an aggrisive odg and that just won’t do.Mine just love people and and kids. They are a very gentle dog when scoilaized at an early age. Good luck with him keep us up on his progress.
