Is it too late to socialize my dog?
Question by Aaron: Is it too late to socialize my dog?
I have heard and read that after 4 months, a dogs socialization period is pretty much over. My golden retriever (and my other two dogs) have sadly not been properly socialized when they were young. I walked them and let them meet other dogs, but I think a class would have worked better because they are unfriendly now. My golden retriever is 6 1/2 months old and when another dog comes up to him on a walk he lets it sniff him but then out of the blue he lunges at the other dog. I have to pull him away quickly and then the owners are scared of my dog. I would like to know if it is too late to socialize, and if it isn’t, how do you socialize my dog now??? Nobody wants their dog around my dog!

It’s not too late to socialize them.. Get your butt out there and take some classes and socialize those dogs before it is too late and they have developed too many bad behaviours..
Give your answer to this question below!

Get a pinch collar and go to a professional trainer to help you. It is not too late, but if you let this go, eventually the dog will become a problem in public
Talk to or check out the website of Caesar Millan (might be spelled as “Cesar”) He has a show called “The Dog Whisperer” and knows all about that stuff. He has a book too. His place is in Los Angeles, but he travels. You can be on TV even! But anyways he is super good with any dog problem. In my opinion I think your dog just has problems individually. Goldens should not be aggresive,
it is never too late.
get your dog neutered. he is sending out bad vibes.
take him to dog training school
It is not too late and if you have a dog training center you can get to, they have classes that will help you to teach your dogs how to get along with the world very well. This is the best and safest way. Your dog will be around others in a controlled environment geared at making him most comfortable with the process at a good school.
sounds like your best bet is to get him in a class while he is still a pup and maybe the trainer can work with him……….has he been neutered? sometimes this will make a difference. Not being neutered will cause him to be more territorial. My golden lab was not around other dogs till he was over a year and is fine with most other dogs, he was however neutered right around that time as well.
Well its never to late to start right? So if i were you i would just take him/her to an obediance school, then again dogs personalities differ depending not only on their breed but their humans characteristicas as well but i mean i could be wrong, but i would definatly try a obediance school.
I don’t think its too old, if you think about it they say u shouldn’t take Ur dog anywhere until they have all their shots but they don’t complete their shots till 4 month. these two things kind of contradict themselves.
It will be too late when they do more than just lunge. You need to get a soft muzzle or a gentle leader and find a class in your area. 6.5 months is nothing…still a baby really. Find a trainer you are comfortable with, explaing your situation and get started working on your dog with a professional. Because your dog lunges he will probably have to wear a muzzle during group classes. I had a similar problem with a Rottie we were fostering. I took him out and walked near (but not too near) other dogs and as soon as he looked like he was about to react I put the muzzle on him. Then for a but 2 weeks I took him out with the muzzle already on and every time he DID NOT react badly to another dog I gave him some praise and a treat until I could walk him successfully into group situations with other dogs and eh was pleasant. I did that in conjunction with an organized group training class and in less than 6 weeks I had a very social happy dog and I have not had a problem since.
NO it not to late to socialize your dog!!! You better start doing it now befor he continues doing this!!
never to late take treats with you on your walk let him know you have them and when you encounter another dog distract him and he don’t luge give him a treat when i take my 2 rotties i make them sit till the other dogs go by and if they behave they get a treat its going to take time also if he don’t like the sound of stones in a can (try it first to see if he dislikes it )put stones in a can tape it shut and any unwanted behavior shake hard dogs dont like loud sounds like that good luck
Younger is always better, but your dog is still young and not a mature adult. He is also showing early signs of dog aggression and dominance which only gets worse as they get closer to maturity. Find a professional trainer now – call your vet or your local humane societies for recommendations – and start working with him now. You should see some improvement – even if your dog is not perfect around other dogs, you’ll be able to handle the situation better and your dog will be better trained. And get him neutered if not already – a dog aggressive golden should never be bred.
Actually it’s very sad. Definitely some damage has been done. However, if you love your dog, you will work it out.
Is your pup fixed?
Good luck and BTW, retrievers “mature” quite late compared to other breeds. That’s good for all of you!!
i agree with pancake. To answer your previous question, the best food you can give them is brown rice steamed with diced chicken and garlic to keep fleas away.
i think doesn’t late you can talk with a shelter’s adviser.maybe they can show you a way..good luck..
