I just got two Italian Greyhound pups who are 3 months old. I didn’t know this before, but I’m pretty sure they’re from a puppy mill. I’m looking into it. They were raised in a kennel from birth, have never been outside and never even been able to run around on the floor. Everything is all new to them. I’m trying so hard to be patient. I won’t bring them back to that place, so I’m really trying to work with them. They’re well behaved , very loving, sweet, but the one thing that is their downfall- they won’t pee or poop outside! I do the thing where I’ll keep them kenneled, take them out, if they don’t go, I bring them in, kennel them, take them out again in 15 minutes or so. Most dogs won’t pee where they sleep… these WILL. THey stink and their kennel stinks. I feel like crying! My kids and I are very attached to them, but I have a 2 year old who’s always walking on the floor. They just don’t get it when we’re outside. It’s freezing MN here, so they just sit and shake and cry. Help!

Have you contacted a professional trainer? Researched potty training? Sounds like your little guys need a more formal approach.

Get them doggie jackets and doggie booties so they can tolerate being outside a little better.
I’d also recommend getting some ‘pee pads’ – waterproof pads treated with pheremones that attract the dog to go to the bathroom on them and not the floor. Because these dogs were confined in a kennel all their lives previously, they’ve suffered some serious psychological damage – it’s unnatural for a dog to go to the bathroom in his crate.
Put a pee pad in your dog’s confined area – not in his kennel, but close enough to it that he can smell it. If they pee on the floor, wipe the pee onto the pad and show it to your dog (just put him close enough so he can smell the pee on the pad, DON’T put his nose in it). They should start to get the concept of the pads pretty quickly.
Obviously, anytime your dog does have an accident, clean him and the accident area thoroughly. Don’t use anything with bleach in it (Clorox, Lysol, etc.). Bleach can enter the body through the skin and the lungs and is very harmful – even fatal – to dogs and humans. You can make a cheap, nontoxic, biodegradable antibacterial cleaner with 2 tbsps of distilled vinegar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon lemon or orange juice (for scent, mainly) and 2 cups of water.
When the dogs do go on the pee pad, praise them like crazy and give them a treat – same as you would if they went outside. Then take the pee pad outside and put it in the spot you want your dogs to go in. Bring the dogs outside and show them the pad and tell them whatever command you’re trying to use for going outside (go to the bathroom, go potty, do your business, etc.). Be consistent, of course.
You’ve been patient and done everything right so far – just keep up the hard work and things should start to click. Remember these pups have been abused with neglect and are psychologically damaged because of it – they’ve forgotten some of the very basics of being a dog. With time, positive reinforcement, and lots of patience, they should recover and turn out just fine. Good luck!
Maybe you should try a different approach to try and train them. Or you could even use pee pads for a while. Oh and about the cold weather just get them coats to wear so that they don’t freeze going to the bathroom.
Well every time they pee or poop indoor rub there noises in it to let them know what it smells like , then put them in the spot that u would like them to go in . this may take a few weeks .

My dog did this as well, I live in Michigan and when I would take her out she would shake and cry she actually got a bladder infection because she would not go potty so even though I hate it and am not a fan of the idea I talked with a trainer and my vet and decided to teach her to go on a potty pad. So that this winter she does not have to go out side next winter she will be bigger and older so hopefully it will not be an issue. good luck and stick with it they are smart dogs.
