If a puppy was born “dead” then revived, is it likely to have health problems in the future?
Question by Sweetness: If a puppy was born “dead” then revived, is it likely to have health problems in the future?
I have a neighbor who takes care of foster dogs and puppies. She had a chihuahua that had puppies. All of the puppies had a pleasant birth except for one, which was born “dead” and after her attempt to resuscitate it, the puppy revived and is now doing well.
Is this puppy likely to have health problems in the future because of this instance?
Thank you.

It depends on the reason that the dog was not breathing when it was born. It’s likely that it wasn’t truly “dead” because it would have had to have some pulse in order to be revived. However, it isn’t uncommon for pups to be born and not begin respiration when the sac breaks. This can be due to the sac breaking early and the pup asphyxiating (which will not cause permanent problems if it’s revived), or it can be due to a congenital defect affecting the lungs (which probably would cause problems in the future).

Usually the puppy will live happily and fine. We have revived several puppies over the years who have all nursed, played, and lived perfectly fine.(:
No , but keep an eye on the mother while shes delivering .
