I Want To Adopt A Puppy What Type Should I Get?
Question by WhatAmI?: I Want To Adopt A Puppy What Type Should I Get?
I want to adopt/buy a puppy from a small breed, no bigger than 25 pounds at adulthood. I want a dog with a low maintanence coat, and an intelligent, but not arrogant personality. I also want one that will be energetic but not hyper, and have a good natured disposition. Ialso want one with NORMAL sinuses, leaving out pugs and other short faced breeds. The pup will attend puppy kindergarten and other training as he grows up. I have three cats (one is 18 pounds and not fat), a husband with canine experience, a large fenced yard.
Thank you.

dachsunds are really great pets! they are sweet loveable and friendly. you can’t go wrong, and they are so darn cute!
What do you think? Answer below!

try breeding a yorkie and a toy poodle together. it costs $ 500-$ 1000 bucks. (since its not made the traditional way) they are pretty nice, very small, dont bark that much and just curious. its also a good begginers dogs for children (if you have any).
one that needs a home who fits your requirements
i would go to petfinder.com to find out that is a greaqt website.
although different breeds tend to have different traits they also have personality, the best way to pick would to be to go to the shelter and spend a little time with the pups
even at an early age some of their personality shines through
also cosider a cross breed, they often avoid problems that pure bred dogs have due to inbreeding
The type of puppy is really up to you, only you know what you can handle as far as personality, aggressiveness, size aso aso is concerned, but if you do decide to get one, don’t go to the store and buy one. Do you have any idea how many puppies are in need of forever homes??? Go to your local Humane Society or find on at petfinder.com. All you have to pay is the adoption fee. It’s usually a lot cheaper than the pet store and you will know that you saved a puppy from being put down.
It all depends on what you like, I would get informed on the types of pups there are, or go to an exhibition of people who breed them or like a dog contest or whatever, there you see all different types…if u can and if there is one…but personally, I always liked french bulldogs…they’re just soooo cute!!!!
Well…it sort of depends. Is this your first time? If so, you should get something that’s not too easy or too hard. Like yorkshires, poodles, maultises, westies, etc. Medium dogs. I do not recommend chihuahuas because they are too small and are ver expen$ ive. I hope I helped.
a small poodle is a good dog. It does not shed and they are a smart and loyal dog and real good to train.
Definitely Dachshunds like Sexy Sam said. They are so easy to maintain, they hardly shed at all shed (at least the short-haired type), they are intelligent, they are small even into adulthood, they are lovable and as cute as a button! I love Dachsies!
There are short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired and I believe there are miniature and standard sizes by the way.
Try going to your local humane society. They have many dogs in needs of homes. They are all sizes, colors, breeds & sizes & have different coats. I’m sure you can find the perfect dog there. Good luck!
do this quiz – http://dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm this should help you choose a breed. You should also check out your local animal welfare shelter/animal adoption/rescue center. They have lots of small loveable dogs just waiting to be rescued!
I think you should get a Rat terrier, or a Jack Russel Terrier. Both are more of a Wire coat, and easy to keep brushed and bath. I have saint bernards, but if I were you looking for what you are looking for I would say one of those two. Or go to the pound, and find dogs with that mixed into them. Mutts really are the best dogs you can find anywere. I have rescued many and they are Great dogs. Good luck, and thankyou for helping adopt dogs. Hea, go to petfinder.com check out the dogs in your area. Good luck
I would think a Chihuahua would be good.
I’d really reccomend checking your local shetlers, rescues, or petfinder.com for a small breed puppy. There are mixed and purebreds available everywhere, and these will already be up to date on medical care as well as spayed or neutered.
I know you’re thinking puppy, but I’d keep in mind that an adult dog might not be a bad way to go, either. You’ll already know how big it is and what it’s personality is like, and many times rescues will know if they’re good with cats and other animals. Not to mention adult dogs are out of the puppy stage..less whining, less chewing, less housetraining accidents.
And please, do NOT ‘breed a yorkie and toy poodle’ together as another poster suggested. There are enough puppies already out there. Good luck!
If you want a purebred, I would suggest a beagle. They don’t get large, short hair, smart, good with kids…
Or you might just want to shop around the local pound or rescue shelter. Often times they can give you a good idea of how big they will be and you can sit and play with them before you choose. The best part is you get to save a little life.
You should look at Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Intelligent, loving, loyal. Make sure you check the pedigree, ideal weight for a bitch is 8kgs and a dog 10-12kgs. I’ll tell you now, that once you have owned a Cav, you will wonder why you didn’t own one sooner.
Ok DO NOT go with a rat terrier or chihuahua they both tend to be very “hyper/ jumpy” dogs. I recommend going to a humane society or animal shelter and tell them what you are looking for. They can usually recommend a dog for you and your home. If you really want a full breed go with something like a dachshund (they are usually good with other animals) But ultimately you need to spend time with whatever pet you choose and introduce it to your cats before making a commitment. ALL dogs have different personalities and you might be surprised. Good luck.
I have a Sausage dog and she is completley LOW maintenance.
We adopted a Shih Tzu in February–he was three pounds then (6 weeks old) and is now 12 pounds and almost fully grown. He is really great with our 3 year old daughter, DOESN’T SHED, is sweet tempered, loves to play but is not annoying and learned his name in less than one day. We live in an apartment where we are not supposed to have pets so we puppy pad trained him. He learned really fast but I still have to change them several times a day. I really wish we had waited until we got our own house with a yard. He loves the park. I thought his coat would be high maintanence because it’s long but we brush him about once a week and he is good. We have gone 3 weeks without bathing him and it wasn’t that bad–he’s an entirely indoor pup. We did our research on temprement, care (he doesn’t eat us out of house and home), and requirements before we decided. Good luck puppies are cute and they grow up
I sent you an email so that I KNOW you’ll get it!!
You can get pugs ( there the ones with flat faces ). I had 6 they are really easy to take care of and you can also get a chiwawa ( i can’t spell it . Some of them are sweet i have 2!
a yorkshire terrier they are kind of expensive but they are very small enjoy cats are best friends and totally adore people.
go to pound let dog pic u…..makes best companion…
Since you want to adopt one, and you have all these preconceived ideas as to what your puppy should be like, the best thing for you is to visit the animal shelters, and see for yourself what dogs they actually have available.
Dachs, Jack Russel terriers, whippets, French bullies, mini pins, beagles and mongrels all are great (though I’m really a large-breed person), but if I were to choose, the Jack Russels, I heard, are a great bet. They’re intelligent, jolly and low maintenance! Easily trained and loyal. Nice dogs! No wonder a few have made their marks in showbiz.
For saving a pup, try going outside the establish breeds and go for the most unappreciated type of dog…a mutt.
Mutts often combine the best of two breeds. And, believe it or not, if you see a lot of mutts, they will have a similar appearance. Almost all are mild tempered, medium size dogs that are intelligent, fun and clean.
Out of all the dogs I have had, four, the one with the most fondest memories were from my mutt called Kismet.
Seriously, consider it.
You should get a Lab, German Shephard, or a collie!!! They are all great dogs and they are family friendly. Although collies sometimes have problems.
I’d higley suggest a Fox terrier smooth, or a toy smoothe fox terrier. I used to have two but i have one know. They are very intelligent and require very low gromming. That would be a very good breed. And they are hyper, but not that much. DON’T get a jack russel if u don’t want a hyper dog. Or, a dauchand but they can get aggresive towards food alot. The best choose is a terrier, or a miniture schanzer.
Go to dogbreedinfo.com. They have a quiz that you answer some questions and it will come up with some dog breeds that would fit your life well.
A rat terrier would be great – they come in different sizes. The Small ones are too Chihuahua looking for my taste. Get a medium or large – they have better personalities. Keep in mind I ‘ve never known any rat terriers, its just that my sister wants to get one, and I’ve been reading up on them for her. And your shorts are too tight.
