Though it’s been six years since I did it last, I was able to successfully housebreak my Great Dane pup with crate training. All sorts of detailed information about how to go about crate training is available on the internet.
I had a strict schedule for my puppy when we first got him.
It was up at 6 am.
He would come out of his crate, and go right outside. We would stay out until he peed.
He would come in for breakfast right away.
About fifteen minutes after breakfast, he would go back outside. He would stay out with me until he peed and pooed.
Then it was every hour on the dot, outside, praise if he did something. and if he went in the house, it was stern “NO”, and we would go back outside.
Dinner time would come, and fifteen minutes after he ate, we would go outside until he peed or pooed.
I would not give him any food or water an hour before bed time, and right before he went into his crate, he would go outside with me.
You really need to watch when he is drinking water, because usually puppies of that age will have to go to the washroom 15-30 minutes after.
You just need to be consistent, and strict, and you will get the job done in a matter of weeks, generally. Just remember that right now he does not have much bladder control so accidents will happen but you really need to redirect his behaviour, but saying “NO”, and taking him outside.
Staying on a schedule is key. I do basically the same thing as the poster above me, although a puppy at 2 months should be able to hold it for 2-3 hours, so I think you can stretch going outside to every 2 hours.
If you use a crate (I suggest you do, it gives the dog a place like a den where he can feel safe), take him out immediately in the morning and he’ll definitely pee. Feed him at the same time every day, right after he’s done eating take him our for about 5 minutes. If he uses the bathroom praise him! If he doesn’t go in this time, go back inside and wait a couple minutes, then go back outside and try again. Repeat until he uses the bathroom outside and praise him.
It’s also important to always use the same door to go outside to the puppy doesn’t get confused as to which door to ask for when he needs to go out.
For the evening meal time, do the same as the morning, going out after he eats until he goes.
I have a pit bull foster right now that’s 3 years old and wasn’t house trained when we got him. They pick it up quickly, in a few days he should be asking for the door to go outside!
Hope this helps, it’s easy just be patient!
Hey I see that you are looking for some dog training advice. You know recently one of my friends, Michael really needed some advice on how to potty train his dog. He tried a few things but decided to follow the secrets of dog training course and he managed to successfully have a fully trained dog in a few weeks.
