Question by karijane: how do you get a nervous anxious dog to walk out in open spaces? She has issues! animal behaviourist cost alot
I have had my little cavalaier King Charles for about 4 years now and try as I may I cannot get her to go for walks. sounds weird I know! The vet suggest an animal behaviourist which I guess is probably the only option. Maybe someone else has an unusual dog like mine. I guess like people animals can have ‘issues’ to! She is also shy of strangers as well which evidently is not characteristic for this breed of dog… anyway just thought I would give this site a go maybe someone mite be able to shed some light for me and my dog!

Try the TV with the same volume on like outside world and see how she acts. If she gets the same problem, bingo keep it on until she get used to it. After that try taking her out again, let me know.
your dog will probably have some case of agoraphobia it sounds strange having a dog with that.It could also be a bad experience of the outside world.
I hope I’ve helped?.
BLOW IT TO SMITHERENES!!!
OR JUST force it too…
Start small. Take her out on very short leash walks at first.Start in the house where she is the most familiar, then walk in the yard.Let her get used to the leash. Be confident yourself. She takes her cues from you.Every day go a little further.Repeat each step everyday for at least a week.Give her treats for progress.Don’t reprimand for regressing.Don’t push or pull on her leash. Hope this helps.
You may be able to get another dog that does like to go on walks, and introduce the old dog to the outside with the new dog, (after they have interacted indoors, if they seem to get along)
take them out and let them take one step. then the next day let them take two steps outside. the third day let them take 3 steps and so on and so forth or you can have someone out there with a doggy bone and try to persuade them to go farther every day
Your dog is having anxiety problems. You must put the leash on her, and go out the door. You are pack leader. You KNOW she will follow you, because you are the boss. Do not talk to her, do not reassure her that everything is alright. Do not pay attention to her fears, or other dogs.
You decide where to go, and when to sniff. She will know you are pack leader, and will protect her. You have to take control. When you allow her to act fearful, you are giving her responsibility for her and your safety, and she doesn’t want that, but she has to do it, hence the anxiety.
You need to be calm and assertive. Your dog gets the same feelings you feel when she is around you. I have a male shar-pei that is terrified of men but when I am close to him he becomes calm and knows that he’s safe. I agree you should start off on short walks, remember you are the “pack leader” and be calm. The more you baby her the worse it’ll get. You should be able to put a leash on her and take her for a walk. Don’t pick her up when strangers come by, if she runs behind you move. Hope this helps.
Simple! I have lots of expirience with dogs and its happened before. Before you take thedog outside put chairs and taables out, then put it on a tie out then you have to play with the dog and give it treats. act like your having the time of your life! then every day do that for about a week. THen dont have any funiture outside and still play with her still on the tie out. Do that for about 2 days. Then invite some friends she doesn’t know over to play with her have them give her treats and stuff. then walk her around in the yard on a halter leash (those are the best for dogs who don’t like walks) then walk around the block. During this process do not be nervous at all. She was probably a little scared on her first walkand you were confused. She picked up on that and continued that behavior after you did. If she acts scared don’t pay attention to it just keep playing and dont tel her its ok.
try bringing him out little by little or exposing him to people and other dogs slowly. you know, progresively, not at once.
