How do I care for a Golden Retriever puppy?
Question by ashwinie: How do I care for a Golden Retriever puppy?
I want to get a Golden Retriever puppy. But I need to know how to take care of one as well. I need to know if they are good breeds and if they are easy to train. But most of all will they make a good friend? I need to know a checklist of things that I have to get ready before my Golden Retriever puppy arrives and I need to know the maintenance of these dogs. I also need to know what to feed them and how to control their weight. I also need to know whether to get a female or a male and I also need to know whether I need to exercise them a lot. I basically need all the tips on taking care of a Golden Retriever. Would someone help me please? Thank you!

You obviously have internet. Do some research on the breed and caring for dogs or buying some books on the breed.
Note the temperament and health problems. Make sure you have the right home and have enough time, patience and care to look after a GR ![]()

A golden retriever IS bred to HUNT. So, they need lots lots of exercise. If they dont get it, trouble. They need brushing everyday. You should have it fixed, settles them down a little too.
i own a labrador retriever and they are like golden retrievers. you need a dog crate so its easier for the potty training it helps their bladders hold in the pee longer because they wont pee in their own crate. you need the food of course and many toys for it to chew on. you can also get a puppy shampoo for later on depending on the age of the pup. they are wonderful companion breeds very loyal and super smart fast learners and love to please. you will need a brush because golden retriever coats are long and need to be brushed. good luck
i just got a golden retriever puppy too and i really enjoying having her around she can be a little naughty but she has been fairly easy to train she can already shake and weve only had her 3 weeks
Keep your golden’s weight down. Overweight dogs have more health problems, including heart trouble and arthritis.
Step 2Learn about the health problems associated with this breed: hip and elbow dysplasia, cataracts, congenital heart disease, epilepsy, thyroid disorders and allergies.
Step 3Brush your golden weekly to help keep shedding down. This breed sheds year-round.
Step 4Bathe the dog infrequently; it doesn’t require special grooming and can be washed at home.
Step 5Make sure to trim this dog’s nails monthly to prevent foot problems.
Step 6Remember that retrievers try very hard to please and train fairly easily as long as you are consistent and patient with them.
Step 7Keep your retriever inside if at all possible. This is an extremely social dog, and it will be very unhappy if left alone outside while its family is together in the house.
Step 8Check with your vet regarding anal expressions – some dogs need help with this and it’s a job better left to a professional. Look for signs like the dog dragging its bottom along the floor.
Step 9Be prepared to enjoy a good 10 to 14 years with your dog, as this is the average life expectancy of a golden retriever.
Goldens are great family dogs. They take awhile to mature though. About 2 years to be honest. You need puppy chow for the 1st year. Start him off as crated. This is the most important tool in puppy training. Get a wire crate just large enough for him/her to stand and trun around. Get a waterbottle that hooks onto the side of the cage. It’s much neater than an open bowl. Put a towel or some shredded newspaper in the crate so that it can be easily cleaned. Put some toys and chewies in the crate. Don’t try to start housebreaking till he/she is about 5 months old. A puppy’s bladder just starts to gain control then. make sure he/she has all of their puppy shots and ask your vet for flea and heartworm control medications. Make sure he/she has a collar that fits properly and that their name, your name, address and phone number are on a collar tag. Phew! After you have done all of these things and babyproofed your premises, give them love and hugs and sweet talk everyday.
best place to get tips on this stuff would be a breeder. i can tell you that golden retrievers are great dogs very affectionate and friendly. they are smart so training is a fairly simple process providing you stick by the rules, maintenance wise, they need there coat brushed regularly as for bathing there’s a fairly mixed response depending on whether your planning on showing the dog or if it’s just a pet. weight control is the same as any other animal, regular exercise one walk a day if possible, and appropriate feeding, check food packs for an idea of how much you should be feeding your dog because what you might find is different brands have different feeding amounts based on nutrition content ect. as for male or female either way, I would get a female myself but to tell you the truth, it doesn’t make that much difference if your getting it neutered, which I highly suggest.
as I said first for the best advice talk to a breeder or a vet could also help
