How can I learn to better understand my dog and have a better relationship with him?
Question by Katherine S: How can I learn to better understand my dog and have a better relationship with him?
I have 2 dogs. My oldest dog is a male and he doesnt listen to me. Well sometimes. I dont have the money to take him to a training class, nor do I live near a place that offers pet training classes.
Can someone please help me. I would like to better understand my dog and learn to be a more dominate owner so he will listen to me. Please help. I appreciate your answers.
Everytime I try to bond with him, my youngest dog has to come in and interupt. What should I do about that?
I just dont know what else to do. I appreciate your help.

Take up Veterinary Medicine courses.
Dogs want to be directed.. Your oldest dog is the alpha dog or at least he thinks so. Cuddle with them less and reward only when they listen to your direction.
There are excellent books that will help. Check out your local pet store for dog obedience classes – this would probably be best. To get help you would have to provide a lot more information about how you interact with your dog; when does he not listen, what are you trying to get him to do and most importantly HOW are you trying to communicate. Dogs do NOT understand English – they react to tone of voice and praise/rewards that are given at the proper time. You can learn how to train dogs from lots of different places. Good luck.
play with it more
much depends on the breed of the dog you have and just like people dogs have different personalities. Try to pick up some books that are for the breed of dog that you have. If you have a mutt this can be hard. Dogs are a pack animal and feel comfortable, and secure when they have a dominate, but loving Master. They get stressed when things are out of order and they do not understand the social structure. This is why training classes are so important for both you and your dogs.
watch the “Dog Whisperer” on NGEO channel. if you don’t have cable go to his website Cesar milan .com. he has virtual webinars and news letters you can recieve. also, there are 2 books by William Campbell. Better behavior in dogs, & Problem behavior in dogs. all of these things have helped me. I am currently testing for ISCC certification and dog behavior is a big part of this process. The books really helped me understand how dog’s think. They think differently that we do.
spend more time with your dog love it and learn its body language
First of all, be proud of your self for not just adopting the usual attitude of allot of people here and “just give them more love”. Second of all, DO NOT EVER listen to anything Cesar Milan says about dogs. All his remedies are based upon the same old thing. He knows as much about them as I know about how to fly discovery to the moon. Now, separate the 2 dogs so that you will have time to be alone with the dog of your choice. There are a ton of books out there and videos that will teach you how to do basic obedience with them. Go to the library and see if they have any DVDs on training by Ivan Balabanov or Ed Froley. They make some of the best instructional videos anywhere. If they have them, watch them, and learn through those methods and apply them to your dogs. It would be very irresponsible of me to sit here and tell you specific techniques to apply to 2 dogs that I have never seen and know nothing about. Other then general stuff, such as becoming the one they look up to, I find it very uncomfortable giving specific advice on the web. See if you can find these 2 DVDs and learn as much as you can from them.
Lots of love…..*Lots* of attention…talk to him. All of the above!
I’ve found this works wonders! http://www.k9deb.com/nilif.htm Good luck.
