House/Cage Training my new puppy-help!??!?

Question by The Hopeful Beloved: House/Cage Training my new puppy-help!??!?
I just got a 14 week old Shih Tzu puppy…she’s the sweetest thing. Here’s my situation: She ate about 2 hours ago, so she’s long overdue to go poop, and I’m trying the whole take her out every 5 minutes thing, but it’s not working-she just goes and lies down in the grass!! For two hours this has happened!! Any ways I can get her to go? And this happens frequently not just this morning.

*Side note* For all of you cage-training haters out there, do your research! Dogs love having a “den”!

Your on the right track, and thank you for not using puppy pads! You just have to go over the points of crate training:
1. A puppy has a bladder limit of 40-60 minutes per month of age. so a 3 month old should be able to hold it for a min 120 minutes.

2. Take the dog out 15 minutes after eating, soon as it wakes up from any nap, and before going to sleep for the night.

3. Puppies are like babies, they go potty in the night too. So you will have to get in the habit of waking up in the middle of you night sleep to take the dog out; prior to an accident.

4. When opening the crate, escort the dog straight to the back yard! do not stop for anything, and don’t give praise for waking up and looking cute. Praise your dog for completing the task of waking up, going outside, and using the bathroom there.

5. As studied and foolish as it sounds, say “potty” or something else that relates to bathroom, to remind your dog why it is outside. This will pay off in the long run.

6. Give lots of love when a proper potty break is preformed.

7. Hyper activity will lead to an accident! If you play with your puppy inside, take 15 min breaks to go potty.

8. Potty training is all about one on one time, so a couple of no night out weeks will lead to faster training. No offense and no insult but you don’t see a lot of Moms leaving their toddler home alone to go clubbing. If you want to leave for long periods of time, leave you puppy with a sitter that knows the drill.
