House/Cage Training my new puppy-help!??!?
Question by The Hopeful Beloved: House/Cage Training my new puppy-help!??!?
I just got a 14 week old Shih Tzu puppy…she’s the sweetest thing. Here’s my situation: She ate about 2 hours ago, so she’s long overdue to go poop, and I’m trying the whole take her out every 5 minutes thing, but it’s not working-she just goes and lies down in the grass!! For two hours this has happened!! Any ways I can get her to go? And this happens frequently not just this morning.
*Side note* For all of you cage-training haters out there, do your research! Dogs love having a “den”!

Your on the right track, and thank you for not using puppy pads! You just have to go over the points of crate training:
1. A puppy has a bladder limit of 40-60 minutes per month of age. so a 3 month old should be able to hold it for a min 120 minutes.
2. Take the dog out 15 minutes after eating, soon as it wakes up from any nap, and before going to sleep for the night.
3. Puppies are like babies, they go potty in the night too. So you will have to get in the habit of waking up in the middle of you night sleep to take the dog out; prior to an accident.
4. When opening the crate, escort the dog straight to the back yard! do not stop for anything, and don’t give praise for waking up and looking cute. Praise your dog for completing the task of waking up, going outside, and using the bathroom there.
5. As studied and foolish as it sounds, say “potty” or something else that relates to bathroom, to remind your dog why it is outside. This will pay off in the long run.
6. Give lots of love when a proper potty break is preformed.
7. Hyper activity will lead to an accident! If you play with your puppy inside, take 15 min breaks to go potty.
8. Potty training is all about one on one time, so a couple of no night out weeks will lead to faster training. No offense and no insult but you don’t see a lot of Moms leaving their toddler home alone to go clubbing. If you want to leave for long periods of time, leave you puppy with a sitter that knows the drill.
What do you think? Answer below!

I found when trying to house train my dog instead of just going out for a quick potty I would actually take him on a long walkie to get him to go. If your just going out in the yard she may not want to go in her bit of grass so go for a real walk around the neighbor hood so she gets lots of place to choose from and make sure when she does go there’s lots of ‘Good girl! Your so smart!’ blah blah blah and make it a BIG deal. She’ll think ‘yeah! every time I do that out here I get lots of cuddles’ should help out.
Also I very much approve on kennel training.
give her more water because she mite be constipated
Try taking her out about 15 minutes or so after she eats. Its new to her being away from a litter and all so keep that in mind. If she doesnt seem like she has to go or wont go try and i know this might sound weired, take a warm wet clothe and wipe her underside with it. The water and warmth will stimulate those urges to go, making it harder for her to resist. With in a few minutes she might only pee but it will be outside, and she will put 2 and 2 together and poop outside to. Make sure to show how proud you are of her after she goes. After all they only want to make us happy
Hi I have a new 8 week old puppy.
We have had him for six days now, he only ever poos around the time of his next meal, he is on four per day. So his poop times are 7am, 1pm, 5pm, and 11pm… deffo not every two hours.
He doesn’t wee/poo for up to six hours (very contradictionary to what the training guides and people tell you) then does three wees and a poo in the space of an hour and a halve. He is crated in the morning for a bit and at night. He has never had an accident in there since we got him 6 days ago.
In general look for the sniffs, excitement and circles, that is when she is about to go. Take her out as soon as you see this, or when you release from the crate and always prompt her with a command such as wee wee, plus take her out again during and or after meals. Don’t play or praise her when you first go out just keep saying wee wee, then once she starts say wee wee and loads of good girls and fuss.
I get a little frustrated at times thinking mine is surely in need, today he even started his poo outside and then finished it inside. But it’s a learning curve for me such as leave the door closed whilst he is in the garden so he doesn’t run in. If I catch him toileting inside I say a firm no and put him outside with the wee wee command. But I don’t punish him, it’s forgotten about as soon as that no has come out by myself and if I didn’t see him do it, I just clean it up and stay quiet.
I think every 5 mins is a little too much, I trust my dog to tell me when he needs to go by keeping an eye on him. He 100% goes after the crate, but meals and play times I find a little unpredictable, but he has had 5 wees and 1 poo inside out of about 100, which us watching for the signs and using our gut instincts. So he is doing really well, but I try to not make the garden bit’s too drawn out as I want to keep that area as his toileting area for now, and not make him feel like he is being punished by having to be out there too much or not allowed in the house. One more thing don’t leave her out in the garden alone at this point, it will feel like punishment, and you want the house breaking to be all praise and kindess for her.
Good luck and enjoy… my, my isn’t is tiring!
My shih-tzu has never really gotten on a strict potty schedule. I feed her at the same time every day but her poop habits are unpredictable. Just watch her like a hawk – as soon as she starts turning around in circles get her out!! Depending on how full her stomach was before she ate, it might be awhile before she poops. My dog sometimes doesn’t poop her evening meal until the mext morning!! My vet told me as long as she goes, it does not matter how long after she eats.
Enjoy your pup! Shih-tzus are the best!!
i bought my pom. from a dog store. i don’t what else you could call it. it was horrible. the had about 50 pups in a plywood box all breeds. we bought star. the vet said she was to young to be away from her mom. how we house trained her was to put her in a small box at night to sleep. in the am. we would get her out and say go pee. take her out and keep telling her to go pee. now i ask her if she needs to pee. if she don’t she just lays down. if she dose she runs to the door.
