Housebreaking/training my new puppy!! Any suggestions?
Question by ashesmarie88: Housebreaking/training my new puppy!! Any suggestions?
I just got a new puppy. He’s a pit bull/border collie mix and he is soooo cute. He just turned 6 weeks old sunday and were trying to housebreak him and train him not to bite. Seems like when he plays he wants to bite right at your face. He’s doing alot better but still does it pretty often. I know he’s just being a puppy but anything we can do to try to break his habbits?

For housebreaking what I did with my puppy is everytime he starting peeing or pooping in the house I would say no and rush him outside. First he looked at me all weird but after a couple of times he starting doing his business outside and I rewarded him with treats. For the biting thing, well I would buy lots and lots of toys and everytime he bites you, just replace your hand with a toy. Hope this helps=)

At 6 weeks of age this puppy should not have been taken from his mother and litter mates. Between 6-8 weeks is when the mother and litter mates teach him bite inhibition.
As for breaking his habits. He doesn’t have any habits he’s too young. All his behaviours are instinctive.
It will be a few weeks before you can house train this pup. His bowels and bladder are immature and he has no more control than a baby human.
If the biting gets out of hand I suggest making a high pitched yelp similar to the sound dogs make when they’re in pain. Hopefully this will make him be more careful not to hurt anyone during play
